Gammel Estrup The Danish Manor & Estate Museum

In the hilly countryside of Djursland, Gammel Estrup Manor stands with its red walls and high towers. The history of the manor can be traced back to the 1300's, and for 600 years - until 1926 - it was owned by the same family. For generations the manor was the setting for the life of the family and its wealth - with beautiful art objects, a great number of employees, and presentable surroundings. All year round Gammel Estrup Manor offers activities and exhibitions on life at the Danish manors. The elegant halls, the big kitchen, the baroque garden with the Orangeries, and the surrounding cultivated landscape all give us an insight into the life of high and low througout the times. There is a play area in connection with the baroque garden of the museum. You may enjoy your packed lunch in one of the Orangeries or at the open air benches and tables. You are also welcome to picnic on the lawns og buy your launch at Restaurant The Old Stable. Dogs on a leash are welcome in the garden.

Make your choice eæwhen you arrive: The Castle or the farming museum - Both will take a lot of time. I went for the castle castle first, and that is imho the best choice. Also visit the black smith and the park.

About an hour drive from Aarhus, this is a great way to spend an afternoon feeling a real sense of place, with rune stones (carved memorials) burial mounds, remnants of a palisade and a sense of the conversion to Christianity. The museum is interesting and well designed, using high tech interactive exhibits to tell the Viking story, and gives a real sense of context to the historical site.

Last time we visited the light house was some twenty years ago. Then it looked like now. Except for the comfortable path that goes almost all the way. Cant wait to vist again in twenty years time. Admission is free, I think 10 DKK would guarantee towers survival when next move is necessary. Great view and outing.

Lindholm Hoeje Museum

The burial site of Lindholm Hoje is one of the most beautiful ancient monuments in Denmark from late Iron Age and the Viking Age. Several hundred stone circles indicate the tombs. In the museum, you can see an exhibition on the lives of the Vikings on Lindholm Hoje as well as a new exhibition on the ancient time in the land of the Limfjorden.

Ejerslev Havn

This was an old mine, now closed, turned into a beautiful lagoon. The name says the blue lagoon which has a round the lagoon walking path of little more than 1 km. The views are amazing with also possibility to sit and do a little picnic. On the other side of the cliff is the sea. The coast line is beautiful for a walk too.
