Top 10 Free Things to do in Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, Andalucia

March 10, 2022 Dorsey Hagwood

Featuring limestone cliffs, cave systems (the largest of which—the Hundidero-Gato complex —has prehistoric origins), and deep gorges, it’s no wonder that Sierra de Grazalema is considered to be one of Spain’s most stunning ecological landscapes. Budding botanists can lose themselves in more than 1,300 different species of flora, while birders will delight in the prospect of seeing communities of Bonelli’s eagles and the endangered Egyptian vulture. More into mammals? The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is also home to genets, mountain goats, and otters

Artesania textil de Grazalema

We made a special trip to Grazelema to see the woollen textile factory and goods. We found it and were helped by the receptionist/sales clerk. She was very helpful and very pleasant even though there was a language barrier. Let's face it, women will find a way to communicate especially when it comes to shopping choices. I made a great choice and look forward to wearing my short Cape in the fall/winter in cooler temps. I love that this woollen garment is made here in Grazelema from the growing of the woolly sheep to the manufacturing of the garment. A perfect authentic souvenir from Spain. Note: check for siesta times of closure during the week and weekend closure so you will not be disappointed. If I remember correctly they are closed from 1:30 weekdays (siesta) and reopen later in the day and are closed from 1:30 PM on Fridays through to Monday morning when it reopens. Please check their website to make sure.

So to clarify we didn’t actually visit the factory (although we passed it on our way back from Ubrique). We sampled these wonderful Cabra cheeses (live goat cheese) while dining at El Muelle in Estacion Benaojan (see my TA review). It has an exquisite sharp taste with a firm texture (similar to a well aged cheddar)- perfect with a good Fino or Manzanilla. Anyway, we were complimenting Christa who runs El Muelle and she introduced us to the cheese chef who made it who just happened to be dining there at the time. Lots of Holas! and chit chat followed. We were very keen to get some back in the UK to share with family and friends. It transpires they do not ship to UK but they dropped off a Kilo for us to bring back. How’s that for service. If you visit the factory you can buy there. If you are into “artisan” foods then this is a strong recommendation.
