Hokitika Craft Gallery

The Hokitika Craft Gallery is a unique space displaying a rich variety of both art and craftwork. It provides an excellent opportunity to buy exciting works made locally and showcases the talent, skill and originality of some of the very best creative people on the West Coast and the rest of Aotearoa / New Zealand.

On walking past I was immediately drawn to this gallery as a craftsperson myself. I am a Kiwi and rarely visit the plethora of tourist craft shops that abound in our country. The Hokitika Craft Gallery offers beautifully crafted objects by local artists. They have a range of items that I've not seen anywhere before. Bought some beautiful little gift cards for future use. Locally made beard balm for my husband, hand balm for myself (both with without plastic containers). And only just resisted the beautiful garden sculptures on display. The lovely lady working during my visit was both welcoming and very knowledgeable about the 70+ artists and crafts people represented in the shop. Would definitely visit again and highly recommend if you're looking for a unique and we'll made local item.

The Westland Industrial Heritage Park is part of the heritage walk in Hokitika. It’s an interesting place to see old machinery and talk to the wonderful volunteers that work on the bits of history. My personal favourite were the old fire trucks! Entry is free, but it’s definitely worth giving a donation to.

I was impressed with the detailed discussion about the tools and techniques required to turn greenstone into wearables. Being a crafts person I appreciated the willingness to share info on tools and techniques. The end products are both beautiful and true to the nature of the stone. I purchase a stone that is almost black. Not being a fan of greenie jade, the stone I found was exquisite!
