Top 10 Free Things to do in Freeport, Maine (ME)

May 1, 2022 Fernanda Pittenger

Local legend claims that Freeport was the birthplace of Maine, the decision to separate from Massachusetts having been made in a local tavern way back in 1789. Whether this is truth or folklore, Freeport has much more to offer, including South Freeport, a historic harbourfront village offering up a fresh catch every day. Nearby Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park and the Mast Landing Audubon Sanctuary provide nature trails with scenic views of the Atlantic Ocean over the rocky shores of Maine.

A short drive from downtown, nestled back from the road is a quiant little shop, Bessie's Farm Goods. Fantastic shopkeepers can tell you about the many local artists who have filled this small shop with hand made pottery, cards, wool good, wood pieces, decorative items, unusual sculpture and other handmade goods. Stars & Stripes Brewing

We stopped at Stars & Stripes for a beer while visiting Freeport and we really liked the place. Staff was super-friendly and the beer was great. Love the décor and theme for the taproom. Since it was raining when we were there, we sat inside, but it was very comfortable. There is an outside patio area that looked nice, but we weren't able to use it in the weather. The popcorn is a nice touch also. We would definitely stop again if we were back in the area.
