Top 10 Free Things to do in Chania Town, Crete

September 10, 2021 Karren Gelb

Much of the old town district of Chania was developed around its harbor, which was built by the Venetians during the 14th century. Its lighthouse still proudly overlooks the Mediterranean. Here you’ll find several cinemas and historical attractions like the Archaeological Museum, a collection of Minoan and Roman artifacts that’s housed in the former Monastery of Saint Francis. Word nerds will especially enjoy the Museum of Typography.

It's a great store, every piece is carefully selected. For adults and children. You will find a lot of gifts from Chania. I love the handcrafted leather bags and rare designer accessories. The glasses made of wood caught my attention. Everything is amazing about this shop. Nina, the owner of the store, I enjoyed talking to her, always smiling. If you want to have something special, you should visit this store.

Greek National Football Museum

A unique Museum, the biggest one for a National Football Team, the Greek National Football Team, which was European Champions in 2004, located in the Old City of Chania and has over 1000 exhibits, balls from World Cup and Euro games, official shirts, photos and thw whole history of Greek football. BECAUSE OF CORONAVIRUS EPIDEMIC, THE MUSEUM WILL BE CLOSED FOR THE WHOLE MARCH.

So glad we made the time to visit, this little museum is excellent, and can easily be visited even if you’re short of time. I’ve never been to a museum quite like this, it really is quite unique. We were limited on time, so were shown the shirts and memorabilia related to my team first - so I got to try on the shirts and get the pictures - then were shown the vast collection of international shirts worn by the greatest players of all time, and finally the lifting the Euro 2004 trophy given to Greece when they won the tournament. The personal touch here is what really makes it special though; being meeted and greeted as a friend, by someone with a genuine love of the game, and who delights in sharing this amazing collection that you can physically touch and feel, instead of the admiring-at-distance you expect of museums. A true home of world football.

The need for expression and the sense of freedom that creativity gives you made Andrea and Aspasia make their hobby a way of life. The way silver is transformed when you work and process it as well as how it integrates with other materials is an ongoing challenge for them. In their workshop they give shape and form to their inspirational designs. The materials that compose with silver are varied from, recyclable to semi-precious stones. Many times, however, only silver. The result is always unique !!!

Avalon Rock Pub

Avalon is the ultimate Rock Pub in town located in the center of the Old Harbor. Best classic rock tunes along with 8 beers on tap and 100 selected whiskeys to chose from are waiting for you ! "for those about to rock"

The port down Chania is a bit of a mixed bag where you get harassed a bit to go into places. Liking a bit of alternative music this gaff is a great find in a sea of mediocrity. Having been a couple of years back, we returned for drinks again. The music is great with rock classics non stop. They have a great selection of draught beers, including the whole suite of Charma beers (unfiltered lager, pale and dark). There’s even some ales on cask. The other half had a few cocktails too, all of which were very nice and the prices were about what you’d expect for the area. Given a lot of the stuff they have you wouldn’t find elsewhere, particularly on the draught beer side the prices are pretty good to be fair. The lady was also very friendly and welcoming. We went on a few different nights as it was a nice change for the locality.

Old Venetian Harbor

Reviewed By lovetrav_9 - Old Colwyn, United Kingdom

There is so much to see and do in this busy Harbour area including ample shops, bars, restaurants and cafes, boat trips, a museum, an art gallery and the lighthouse plus fabulous views to enjoy. It is also a great walking area. On top of all that, we had a superb lunch. Our time was sadly limited as we had to return to our hotel in Chersonisos, but had a most enjoyable visit and we definitely recommend.

The building of Kibar is a Venetian monastery of the sixteenth century which has been characterized as a monument and has been restored by the world renowned sculptor Carol who curates the place until today. Groovy sounds and refreshing cocktails in an open air place.
