Top 10 Free Things to do in Cape May, New Jersey (NJ)

December 19, 2021 Renato Branum

Yes, Cape May is, technically, on the Jersey Shore. But it’s the antithesis of the Jersey Shore you’ll see on TV—instead of nightclubs and tanning parlors, you’ll find Victorian mansions and a famous lighthouse.

South Cape May Meadows

Considered one of the most important stopovers for migratory birds, this undeveloped oceanfront land contains a bird refuge and freshwater wetlands.

The rain had ended it was just comfortable enough for a late afternoon hike through South Cape May Meadows. No real elevations so an easy hike. Beautiful swans, rabbits, flowers and water. You can step out to the beach for nice views of the Cape May Coast or take in the WWII bunker. Great photo ops for the Cape May Lighthouse too.

So worth the trip - we were staying less than 10 minutes away and I decided to surprise my family. We'd never been to an Alpaca farm before so my wife and two teenage sons were very surprised - and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Jim was our host - he had the necessary handwashing and sanitizing station prepared. After a short introduction, he provided us bags of carrots (teats for the Alpacas) and walked us to the pen to see the male Alpacas, followed soon after by female Alpaca in their pen. Jim was an awesome host, answered all our questions, and taught us all about Alpaca - they are such friendly animals. This visit was definitely worth the time and money!

Bay Springs Farm Alpacas

Bay Springs Farm is a preserved working farm situated on what was the last Dairy Farm in Cape May County. Today it is the site of the largest alpaca farm in the County. We are no longer open, but we have yarn and products for sale on our website and at West End Garage.

Reviewed By 58tinag

We were visiting the area and saw the sign. We called and the owner and she said her and her husband were in their 80s and were not opening up again until there is a vaccine for COVID. They do sell some of their merchandise in the West End garage. We went there to get some alpaca socks.
