Top 10 Free Things to do in Bora Bora, Society Islands

July 21, 2021 Karren Gelb

Turquoise lagoons, soft white sands, and deep tangerine sunsets set the scene for romance on the island so nice they named it twice. Mingle with tropical fish as you flutter around Coral Gardens or Tupitipiti Point, or relax in a self-driving tour as you take in beautiful views of the once-volcanic Mount Otemanu. At the Lagoonarium you can watch shark feedings and swim with turtles. Cap it all off with a succulent meal at one of the island’s fine French restaurants, then sip a tropical cocktail under the stars.

While in Bora Bora we had the pleasure of receiving a recommendation from a local resident to this Pearl shop. Melanie met us and gave us a nice history and explanation of the location and operation of this family owned Pearl farm and jewelry shop with GIA certification. She was very kind and helpful with great insight to help us find products in our price range with great, honest and experienced guidance for complimenting characteristics for my wife's tones. During the finalization of our transaction she was very clear on instruction and made it very easy for us to complete the customs transaction when leaving the country. Highly recommended to all!

This was about my 7th or 8th pearl shop that I went to in Vaitape. I had a fair idea about what price I should be paying. I told Sylvie what I really wanted if I could afford anything there, and then told her what my price range was. She found some necklaces in her store and I picked the one that I wanted. She explained how the paperwork to claim duty exemption worked. Less than 2 weeks later, she responded that she got the Duty Free paperwork. It worked perfectly. Key to this successful transaction: Sylvie. She had the authority to reduce the price, she knew her inventory, she knew how the paperwork was to be filled out. One thing I don't know is if the prices are different in Papeete. I think not.

We came upon truely exceptional pearls on the first day of our two week stay at the Tahia Shop in Tahiti. After touring the islands and the many pearl farms, we knew these first pearls were the one, most perfect in the world. With a phone call to Tahia Tahiti and with the help of Tammo, our sales person, we received the pearls the next day at the Four Seasons on Bora Bora and in time for my wife's birthday. Thank You Tammo!!

The best place you can go to buy pearls in Bora Bora. Don't get suspicious that they don't have a street store front and they work out of their home back patio. Pierre and his wife are very friendly and kind, actually they came to pick us up at the hotel. When you get there Pierre will ask you what you know about pearls and you can get the best on site class and at the end you will know how to pick and choose what you buy. We have learned a lot from him. And then you realize that the quality they have is much better then the other stores. And most the don't pressure you to buy, which is very important. Grazie mille per la bellissima esperienza Pierre. Max and Laura

Alain Despert

By private appointment only at the studio of internationally acclaimed artist Alain Despert. Despert's work was discovered in Bora Bora in 1990 and has exhibited in many major cities throughout the US. His "Absolut Despert" painting was selected for the famous campaign along with Haring and Warhol. His colorful and contemporary paintings are collected by art connoisseurs around the world.

To see Alain’s work either you have to stay at one of the resorts which exhibit his paintings or you visit his home studio in Vaitape. We were lucky enough to meet him and his partner Karen with an easily arranged appointment (via email). His work is splendid, the photos on the internet do NOT do it justice. When you see a Despert in person, you will fall in love with the work. His techniques for adding texture are the real show-stealers. He mixes enamels and acrylics, and divides canvases in unique ways. He captured my eye and stole my heart. And his backstory! Painting is a second career, he went from zero painting to renowned artist in quite a short time. His work is in collections of the rich and famous and museums. You will want to own a Despert. The visit to the house was a great juxtaposition to the the rest of Bora Bora.

My husband and I were exploring Vaitape from our Windstar Dreams of Tahiti cruise. We are so glad we discovered Bora Bora Original. Bora Bora Original is many things: an upscale boutique, an art gallery, a contemporary jewelry store, and souvenir shop. I could have spent hours shopping here and buying much, but alas packing concerns stopped me. My husband and I like to buy a "souvenir of the trip" and we found ours at Bora Bora Original. We purchased a beautiful oil-on-canvas painting of a Bora Bora landscape by Kevin Petras, who happened to be the brother of the store manager. We will proudly exhibit the painting in our Hood River, Oregon home. My husband also found a t-shirt he had to have, which does not happen often. The store staff was very attentive, friendly and helpful. If you are visiting Vaitape, be sure to bring a larger suitcase to hold the treasures you will find at Bora Bora Original.

Deep Sea Pearls

Reviewed By erilouboston

We visited Bora Bora for 2 weeks on our 10 year wedding anniversary, and knew we had to bring pearls back with us. On a snorkeling excursion with David from H2O (also highly recommend!) I asked where to shop for pearls because the amount of shops seemed overwhelming. David's wife Amy had previously worked for Deep Sea Pearls, and he told us to stop in and tell them they sent us. We stopped in the next day and they were absolutely amazing. We needed several gifts for friends and family and not only did they help us pick the perfect things, there was ZERO pressure to buy. We visited all of the other pearl shops in Vaitape, and while they were all lovely and had beautiful pieces; we immediately knew we made the right decision to buy at Deep Sea. We even went back a few days later to purchase a pearl for me, and this time Sacha helped us. He was incredibly knowledgeable - not only did he give us a great education about pearls, he helped us pick out a stunning pearl that will be forever treasured.
