Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Sintza

After a pretty hair-raising drive (or a long walk up the mountain), this monastery really isn’t disappointing! Built into the rocks / cliff side, it boasts beautiful scenery and has quite a magical feel to it. A lone nun lives there for ten months of the year and so it is worth taking her some provisions if you feel like being generous.

Troupis Winery

The Troupis Winery is located in the heart of the Mantineia vineyards at an altitude of 700 m. in the area known as Fteri. It is a modern family business of small capacity as it is exclusively involved with producing and bottling wine from the family’s privately-owned vineyards (approximately 80 stremmas) which they lovingly tend and cultivate. During harvest season (1/10-20/10) the winery is not open to the public

We decided to visit this small winery ex tempore with my spouse, as we were at Tripoli anyway visiting our local friends and had some room in our luggage left. As we went to to the winery, owner walk outside to greet us and gave us a small tour of their facility. After tour owner told about the winery, its products and let us taste their products which were excellent and something different compared to many other wines. We bought about 8 bottles to take with us back to Finland and just trying figure out how to get some more here, as those aren't available in our local liquor stores.

Kalogris Organic Winery

Although the winery was meant to be closed a telephone enquiry from our group of 8 cyclists produced a fantastic welcome. After an interesting talk on the wines and the family's philosophy we settled down to sample a delicious cheese 'pie' while we tasted this year's range of organic wines made from moschofilero, merlot and cabernet grapes. Tatiana could not have been more friendly and informative. We wish them well - and the wines are very reasonably priced for their quality. We cycled away with as much of a selection as we could carry - sadly but deliberately none of them made it back onto our return flight!

The Menalon Trail

The Menalon Trail is a long mountain trail of 75 Km in Arcadia. The trail crosses 9 villages and uses parts of an infinite trail network, which were then rearranged in a serial structure and sign posted systematically by a large group of volunteers from Eastern Gortynia and the participation of Club of Mountaineers and Ecologists of Arcadia (SAOO) under the coordination of the 10 volunteers trained by the ERA team (the funding of the signage and expenses were covered by local businesses and associations). The design and creation of the information and orientation signs was made by Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage with the funding of the Leventis Foundation. The mapping of the area, the construction of the web and mobile applications as well as the software application to plan the signposting was undertaken by the AnaDigit cartographic company. The certification control costs were covered by the Municipality of Gortynia.

We did two hikes: Steminitsa-dimitsana: great hike with both mountain views and lush forest. We visited two monasteries on the way which were really worthwhile. About halfway there’s a bridge with a river which is a good place for a dip. It took us about 5 hours. We passed some people on the first half of the trip and none thereafter. Vytina, small loop, direction of Elati and back: most beautiful part nature wise, authentic Greek tranquil landscape with olive trees, old bridges and rivers. I really recommend using the app “AllTrails” - this shows all the possible pathways and tracks your location live. The trail itself is really well marked, except for a small bit around the water museum (close to Dimitsana). I’m adding the local information on the route in the photos.
