La Ptite Croquette

I was staying at chateau de la post. They had buffet at 37€ per person. To much for my wife pricewise and a buffet style dining. So we were looking for something else. This restaurant caught my eye. A meat centric restaurant. So was an weasy choice. In Belgium the food price is quite expensive, but the portions are huge. So we always do the following. Share first course and dessert and each take a main course. Normally this means I have the menu at 35€ for 3 course and a main course for my wife. There is something strange in Belgium. This country has 2 main languages. Flemish/Dutch and French. I can speak Dutch so in Flemish Belgium I have no problem communicating. What I found strange was in Walloon where French is the Maine language they have more problems speaking Flemish than English. Here there was the problem. Only French menu and they were not able to explain in Flemish or English. Wow. How is it possible in this age?!In Europe even the French can speak English now and it’s quite normal than people can speak 2 languages fluently and 1/2 more at high school level. Here only option was French.People and place seems quite nice. If you can sit outside if it’s sunny. They didn’t have any menu only a written menu on the blackboard. Unfortunately when something is handwritten it’s not clear for me and turns out for the waiter. I explained that I will order the menu, but my wife wants either a entree or a main course ala carts. She was looking at the hamburger. Looking good at 15€ or a fish. They had 2 tuna dishes. Tuna steak at 28€ and something called “piece thon” at 14€. I asked what it was and the waiter explained a piece of tuna and u get two pieces. So let’s try that.Entree we chose the crispy battered mussels with home made tartare. Portion was quite big and easy to share. At10€ is big enough for a main course. Very well made, fresh and tasty.Main course I wanted a steak. Plenty of choices. The pave , brochette (beef on stick/satay) and tagliatta (sliced steak with salad Tuscan special) was all included in the menu.for extra 16 or 6€you could get a Côte os (tbone) or Irish entrecôte (ribeye)I chose the entrecôte and ordered it medium. My wife chose the “piece thon”.When the mains arrived we were pleasantly surprised. The steak looked good. To me it was more like medium rare than medium. The meat was not aged at all. (Dry or wet)quite disappointing as this is quite usual in belgium now.The tuna dish was 2 big pieces of tuna. Very nicely cooked. Quite raw in the middle. This was not what we expected. My wife doesn’t like raw fish. And tbh it was quite raw for me too. Middle was quite cold. Cooked rare.So she was unhappy and I had a strange feeling that this was actually the more expensive tuna steak than the 14€ tuna dish. After we finished I asked about the dessert and instead got the bill. The bill was all priced ala carte and not as menu and of course we were given the tuna steak at 28€. I was starting to get the feeling I was being screwed over here. So I asked for the dessert and I got the ala carte dessert menu. They didn’t explain what was on the board and also how it works when combining with the menu. Dessert menu looks great btw. But by now I had a nasty feeling that I was being conned. Like in the old days in 80s Paris where you order food at a restaurant where you can’t speak the language and by misunderstanding you order the most expensive dish on the menu and that somehow the menu that you were ordering doesn’t work for you but somehow you ordered ala carte. This unfortunately still happens now. But mostly that’s in 3rd world country and/or a tourist trap. It has been years, maybe decades this has happens to me. Because of experience but also internet and TA.So in the end I didn’t want to create a scene and cancelled the dessert and paid the ala carte prices. I was done.I asked the waiter about the 14€ tuna because that’s what I ordered. He of course didn’t comprehend the misunderstanding. It turns out the 14€ dish was also tuna but it was not piece of tuna but a peche thon. 2 pieces of peaches with tuna salad on top. Yikes never heard about this dish before. Certainly not as a main course.Anyway I gave a 2€ tip. I am not sure if I was screwed over here or it was a case of misunderstandings. In the end it was quite expensive dinner and even though what was cooked was good, it had a terrible aftertaste. So bad I write this review. It’s a good restaurant and pricewise is par for Belgium. But if you can’t speak French there is a risk that what happened to me can happen to you.I suggest avoid there are plenty of great places in this area.

We were delighted to happen upon Les Amourettes. Its charming pink decor and nice patio seating. Menu was all French, and though we could make out most of it, the waitress whipped out her phone to google images when I asked about Noix St. Jacques (scallops) and rognons de veau (kidneys!) so thankfully she steered me toward a delectable veal dish with pasta that was from the Italian side of the menu (the restaurant features both French and Italian dishes). My husband went with the safe lasagna Quattro formaggio, which needed no translation! It was a leisurely and delicious lunch. My husband proclaimed it his best meal in Belgium thus far (second for me). Plus, a nice complimentary starter of a ham spread, pizza, and ham/cheese stuffed bread. Quite delightful in all.

We paid our first visit here with friends. What a find. The food was very good, with a wide-ranging selection of reasonably priced dishes. We managed to sit on the terrace, overlooking the river. The view was absolutely breathtaking, so eating our food took longer than usual! The staff were welcoming and friendly - especially Thomas, who spoke to us in English (even though our friends are Belgian residents) and explained about the history of the building. This was our first visit. It it definitely won't be our last! Thank you for you feedback on the quality of ou property and our staff sea you to pleasure

We got the pasta carbonara which was fantastic! The wait staff spoke no English which made for a challenging communication barrier. The food was pricey but delicious and my only hesitation is that they didn't accept credit cards.

La Broche

My partner and I did some hiking in the Ardennes close to Dinant and by coincidence read about "La Broche". The interior seems to have been renovated not too long ago and is creating a very calm, elegant and modern atmosphere. Menu and wine-list are convincing and the prices are fine for what you get. The service is very attentive and obliging. We felt very much welcomed and treated. Definitely to be recommended.

The restaurant is quite small but has a wonderful atmosphere. The food is absolutely amazing. The owner/chef prepares the most amazing sauces for his dishes. The restaurant coped with our large group in an excellent manner. Don't visit Dinant without dining at this reataurant!

What a wonderful restaurant. Very relaxed atmosphere. The waitress was extremely helpful, chatty and friendly. Our food was amazing. I had the scampi brochette to start followed by filet of roebuck. Both cooked to perfection. Filet was accompanied by sweet apple with redcurrent sauce, pureed celeriac and a small potato, all flavours complimented the filet brilliantly. The only disappointment was that I was too full to eat dessert. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

I love to travel and I love to eat. I'm eating when I'm traveling but also eating takes me to the different journeys. This time my journey was beautiful, full of hospitality, warm welcoming, great food, equilibrated flavors, never ending diversity of dishes...I've visited de L'Eau Vive by myself. First I was welcomed in the chimney room, with an aperitive and small amuse bouche, I saw the menu and I made my choice. It was the end of February, so I took truffle menu. Then I moved to the dinning room, my table was in the corner with the view at the river. I don't even remember how many of plates I had. It was a lot thats for sure and I even didn't take the dessert. During my meal I sad that I was studying cuisine in France and actually working in the restaurant myself. Friendly waitress has informed me that after lunch Chef invites me to have a coffee with him. We had an interesting chat about food, restaurants, future plans. I saw passion, I saw love and a lot of hard work. Situated in the middle of nowhere, white house of the L'Eau Vive Restaurant looks like a wooden hut of Hans and Gretel. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is cosy. If you are a gourmet, who loves to travel, you should definitely go there!

This place is a great stop if you're coming or going to the Abbey of Maredsous! Chef Christian will have you locally grown snails ovened with garlic (the snails grow 300m away in the also visitable snailfarm) - or stick to what you know more : champignons on a toast, beer-cooked rabbit or your regular steak-frites... Deserts are just as palatable - try the "Dame Blanche". All this, at decent prices!

I am italian. I'm in Belgium for tourism. I know that when one is abroad, one should never go to own's country restaurant, because usually it's a delusion. But this restaurant made me try some 'rigatoni alla norma' that were just a piece of Italy! Real tomato, real pecorino cheese, real extra vergin olive oil, italian balance of taste.I can swear, the rigatoni were cooked like my mother cook them!Try it. They have also an hoven for the pizza with wood burning inside, like in Italy. That's the first time I try italian restaurant abroad with real italian taste.Vera cucina italiana.
