Top 10 Distilleries in Wisconsin, United States

July 8, 2021 Alice Mieles

When you think “adventure travel” you probably think of far-flung places like Belize and Alaska—not Wisconsin. But if you’re an outdoor adventurer, you’ll find plenty of places to explore in Wisconsin. A vacation in Wisconsin can put you close to the Kettle Moraine State Forest, which has excellent biking trails. Or choose Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands—kayakers will love exploring Lake Superior’s many caves and shipwrecks.

Packers fans don’t wear those cheese-wedge hats for nothing! Foodies will love tasting as many of Wisconsin’s artisanal cheeses as possible. Either drive from cheesemaker to cheesemaker, or choose a Wisconsin vacation in a town with a good farmers’ market—then the cheesemakers bring their wares to you. And what goes better with artisanal cheese than craft beer? In Milwaukee, visit the Lakefront and Sprecher Breweries for tours and tastings.

Wisconsin Dells is a classic family vacation destination. A vacation in Wisconsin Dells will put you close to all the excitement—you’ll have to tear the kids away from the theme parks, wave pools and water parks in Wisconsin Dells!

Lake Geneva boasts clean beaches, golf, and a small-town feel that definitely appeals to city dwellers—it’s a popular getaway for residents of Chicago.

We've been to many wineries and orchards. The proprietor really made our time here enjoyable. My husband and I were able to taste 6 different alcoholic offerings. We liked Summer's End apple wine and the pear champagne. It was so relaxing sitting at the picnic bench and enjoying the warm afternoon in the country. Highly recommend this winery/orchard and you're sure to find a favorite brew.

We enjoyed sharing a sample of 5 liquors and then each ordered a delicious cocktail off their Specialties menu. The staff was great and friendly all around. We ended up buying 3 bottles of spirits to bring home. Can't wait to try them.

J. Henry & Sons

Fourth generation family seed corn farm making internationally acclaimed grain to glass bourbon whiskey. Occasionally hosting farm to table dinners and scheduled bourbon tasting tours.

I bought a bottle of J. Henry bourbon in our local MN liquor store a couple of years ago on the strength of a review calling it "the best bourbon you've never heard of." That description was spot-on, and we've been enjoying it as our preferred sipping whiskey ever since. So, because we took a few days of family vacation (all eleven of us!) a short distance from the Henry Farm, we took advantage of the opportunity for a visit on a cool fall Saturday. A little Bourbon 101 class, Henry family history lesson and tasting of all three of their current offerings preceded a stroll across the grounds and tour of the two rickhouses (one new, one a converted dairy barn) that hold a purported $160M of aging inventory -- the tour being guided by patriarch Joe Henry, who knows his stuff about both farming and bourbon. It was a charming hour and a half for all, including the kids, who loved the setting, the apple cider, and being at the farm. There is no distillery on-site because they contract that part of the operation to a distillery in New Richmond, but everything else is there, including the most unique bourbon you'll ever taste -- all the ingredients are from Wisconsin and most of them are grown right on their own farm. These are great people to support and a great product to enjoy -- highly recommended!

Spent a long weekend in Milwaukee. Did several tours and tastings of distilleries and breweries. This was the best one by far. Brian, the owner led the tour. He shows great passion for his craft, and it really shows in the products he has created. He has the basics (vodka, gin, rum) which are all excellent. It's the experimental liqueurs that are out of this world. The weekend we were there, he had a coffee vodka and a chai liqueur. These are small batch products, which he says run out quickly on the weekend. We were on the first tour on a Saturday, and at least three others on our tour bought a bottle of the chai, and they only had 12 bottles available. Get there early!

Stopped by on a Saturday afternoon and were warmly greeted by the husband and wife who own and operate this family farm/business. Enjoyed the free tastings. Purchased a great tasting signature cocktail. Had a little tour of the distillery and learned about their history. Super nice couple! There’s vodka, gin and bourbon to purchase, along with candles, T-shirts, glassware and handmade crafts. Very nice space; clean and classy. Outdoor seating area to enjoy your cocktail, the view and fresh air.

Was there with my wife this week. We enjoyed some great tasting gin with premium tonic while admiring the beautifully decorated and immaculately clean establishment. The staff was very courteous, attentive and educational without being pushy. Took a bottle of their unique tasting gin home to enjoy in the future. Looking forward to returining.
