Top 10 Cultural Tours in Agrigento, Sicily

March 28, 2022 Claudia Navarrete

Though Agrigento is a modern city of about 60,000 on Sicily’s southwest coast, the majority of visitors come to experience the past just outside of town. At the Valley of the Temples (Valle dei Templi), citizens of the then-major Greek colony of Akragras began building seven Doric style holy monuments in the sixth century BC. The nearby Archaeological Museum helps put everything into context. Agrigento also has some fascinating sights in its old town, like the medieval Norman cathedral.

Came here with my husband for our wedding anniversary and we had a lovely experience is Cassa de montabalno. Maria the housekeeper was amazing. Very helpful friendly and when we arrived we had to organise a Covid test. She organised it with the help of Ivana and we were very happy that they helped us. Maria was a source of information and arranged us to go on a day tour on a Montabalno Day Tour with Nunzio the taxi driver. We had a wonderful day. I would highly recommend this b&b to anyone who loves the tv show. Only negative was we missed the season and not many restaurants were open but we didn’t starve. We bought our food in the local shop and ate on the balcony in the evening. Thank you for having us!

What a trip! Adam, our driver, was fabulous. Nothing was too much trouble for him. The day went according to plan and we had marvellous visits to both the extensive complex of Villa Adriana and then taken up the hill to Villa d’Este and its magnificent water gardens. Thoroughly recommend this out of Rome trip although pre-trip communication from the local provider could be improved.

I and my wife went on a private tour of Noto, Modica and Ragusa with Alessio, the owner of Sicily Grand Tour. Alessio is a native of Sicily and speaks very clear English without any Italian accent, which is a great plus; particularly when he has to drive the car with his mask on and speak. He is very knowledgeable not just about Sicily but also gave informative tidbits of faraway cities like Trieste in the northeast of Italy. We found him very personable as he was always keen to engage in conversation, enthusiastically clicked our pictures with a DSLR, and of course took us to the best spots in each of the three towns. I can easily recommend him for Sicily tours as his communication/approach right from the time I contacted him via email/whatsapp until the very end of the tour was prompt, clear and amicable. SD

I have no words against AGRIGENTO. Marvelous!! You should visit here!! How wonderfull Sicilian people are, they have chrisheded for long time.

We found Michele Gallo through the Rick Steves Sicily travel book. Michele was very easy to work with- contacted us quickly through email and whats app. He arranged for Carmelina to take us through the Valley of the Temples. It was well worth the money to have a guide. The site is large and its hard to understand the interaction between the various temples on your own. The site was closed the day we were supposed to go due to storm damage. Michele notified us the night before, as soon as he learned of the closure. He was able to make arrangements for another day so we did not miss this stunning site. Excellent customer service!

It is a full day trip from Palermo to Etna and Taormina. Our guide Josephine was amazing and told us a lot about Sicily along the way. When we arrived to Etna it occurred that the cable car wasn't working and we had to go to the top by bus. Unfortunately, this took much longer time than a cable car so we had just a shirt stay on the top. After Etna we went to Taormina which is a breath-taking town with wonderful views over Etna and the sea. I wish we could stay there longer as it is a truly beautiful place. Overall, I would recommend this trip to everyone but be ready for a full day trip with lots of driving which can be tiring.

The Valley of the Temples is one of the most outstanding examples of Greater Greece art and architecture, and is one of the main attractions of Sicily as well as a national monument of Italy. The area was included in the UNESCO Heritage Site list in 1997. The archaeological park and landscape of the Valley of the Temples is the largest archaeological site in the world with 1,300 hectares, but the term 'valley' is a misnomer, the site being located on a ridge outside the town of Agrigento. Through this tour you will have the chance to admire the magnificent Doric temples of the sacred hill, as the Temple of Hera (Juno), the Temple of Concordia, Temple of Herakles (Hercules), the Temple of Zeus (Jupiter) and Sanctuary of chthonic deities. Follow the steps and the words of your expert guide and you will also understand the culture that led to the construction of those majestic structures and you will get to know the characters that made Akragas 'the most beautiful city of mortals'.

Inclusions: Private tour, Expert tour guide

Great couple of hours taking part in Italian cooking! See as it was during Covid-19, my partner and I were the only participants. We were greeted by Luca and offered coffee while they prepared the kitchen for us. We helped make bread, learnt how to make macaroni and of course, pizza! we had 2 breaks - and at each, we ate what we made and had a litre of house wine! The macaroni was made into '"pasta alla norma'' and it was my favourite dish of the course. They even emailed us the recipes after. I highly recommend doing this class, it's a cool way to experience with locals.

Although the owner was pleasant, he seemed to have limited knowledge/information about the wines. The Sicilian dishes supposed to be paired were a piece of bread with sundried tomatoes on it and a fish ball - that’s it, nothing else. Not paired with wines as advertised and no other food or nibbles, again as advertised in the pictures. The wines were nice but but barely a mouthful. Once the restaurant started getting busy we were ignored so just left. Really not worth the money as we walked to a nearby bar a bought a bottle of similar quality wine for €22 and got free snacks!!
