The Yucatan capital has both colonial and Mayan treasures to discover. Nearby ruins at Uxmal give some insight into the lives of the predecessors of the conquistadores, who arrived in 1542. Mayan culture is also still evident in Merida's daily life and in the many colorful festivals celebrated here.

If you are looking to improve your Spanish and learn about the culture of the Yucatan, this is the school for you! I highly recommend the "experiencias" program for students who have at least an intermediate-advanced level of Spanish. Hiroshi and Nidi were excellent hosts who always made me feel welcome. From the airport pickup to classes, field trips, and arranging my home-stay, they never overlooked any details. Be sure to take the cooking class with Doña Susi - she is a delight! Everyone at Hola Spanish School is very attentive, personable, and a pleasure to learn from.

This was one of the best travel experiences we have ever done. Aaron and Isabella were wonderful hosts. Aaron knows everything about the history and business of chocolate. Plus you learn some Mayan history as well. The workshop is very nice. It is small so it keeps the instruction very personal. Guests peel and grind the beans and make chocolate in several forms. Then you eat and drink it. This takes under two hours and should not be missed!
