Melba Spiegeltent

Reviewed By urbandrifter - Melbourne, Australia

Went to see Matador at The Melba Spiegeltent in Johnston Street Collingwood (near Wellington Street) on the second night after the opening. Wow. Just Wow. As this isn't the platform to review the performance and more about the venue, all I'll say is that Matador was brilliant and a must see. Will review that elsewhere. Now down to the venue. The tent itself was originally built in Belgium around 1910 and has itself quite a bit of history holding performances across Europe with well-known artists such as Edith Piaf and Kurt Weil. Around 2006 the tent arrived in Australia and this one was renamed after our very own famous opera singer, Dame Nellie Melba. Although located on Johnston Street, it is set just back behind a large building which is also where Circus Oz is located. Approaching the tent, you know it's going to be something different. It's not imposing or ostentatious, but rather there is something alluring and intriguing about the tent. Old world, magnetic and inviting. There was a nice food van on site which sold tasty snacks for those who were still hungry before the performance. Inside is a bar that you could get yourself any sort of refreshment and at $9 for a glass of wine, probably at standard prices. The bar staff were lovely, chatty but also very helpful. The tent is half stage/backstage and the rest is seating in a semi-circle. On the outer part of the tent are booths that hold 6 - 8 people. You are welcome to take your drinks to your seat to watch the performance. It was a warm night when I was there but the temperature inside was perfect, not too hot or cold and considering the tent holds probably 150 people plus the performers, it was nice not to be sweating indoors. The ambience inside is lovely - just ideal. It's an invitation to chat with other people due to the close proximity of the chairs. It has a casual vibe but also a little bit funky and fun. This all leads up to the anticipation of what the performance will be like. The tent itself attracts such a wonderfully diverse range of talented people from comedy to the theatre, live music to cabaret, burlesque to the circus and so much more. This breadth of entertainment makes it even more appealing as there is something for everyone. There are toilets on site which are wheelchair friendly. Car parking around Collingwood can come with challenges so please check you have enough time to find one. Overall, a great venue and deservedly won the best venue at the 2018 Melbourne Fringe. The tent is also available for the community, corporate and private events. Lastly but importantly - the staff are just lovely. Helpful, smiling, chatty, enthusiastic. This is also what makes the experience that much better than a mainstream say, theatre. Well done everyone. I look forward to coming to many more events in the future.

We saw Tim's Astonishment show. Everything about it was absolutely amazing! The theatre is awesome, seats comfortable, it's so small and cozy you can see everything. Tim has a wonderful story-telling style, laced with jokes, comedy, and everyone including the kids gets invited up on stage to participate in a magic trick or two which was really fantastic! We took our kids aged 7 & 10 and they (and we) were enthralled from start to finish. I can't recommend this highly enough!

Arts Centre Melbourne

For more than 30 years, Arts Centre Melbourne has been Melbourne’s leading venue for world-class theatre, dance, music and more. In the Theatres Building, directly under the venue’s iconic Spire, are three separate theatres – the State Theatre, which boasts one of the world’s largest stages and hosts performances by Opera Australia and The Australian Ballet, the Playhouse and the intimate Fairfax Studio. Next door on the banks of the Yarra River, Hamer Hall is a premier venue for musical performances, including the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the Sidney Myer Music Bowl is popular for open-air concerts. The new Australian Music Vault features a free exhibition celebrating Australian contemporary music. On Sundays (10am - 4pm), local artisans showcase their unique handmade goods at the Sunday Market. Book tickets at the box office to see a performance or join a guided tour. A range of cafe, dining and bar options are on site and a 24-hour car park available.

I had a lovely day out with my husband twice now at the Melbourne Arts theatre. The event Chicago in the state theatre level: dress circle the seats were good and I can see well. This is without the huge expense of having to pay more for a better ticket. We were able to park underneath of the art centre for a fee. There is a cafe inside you can buy food hot and cold prior to the event. Coffee was good too.

Bought tickets for shrek in the grand circle, obviously with cheapest tickets we knew that we'd be sat high up. Had an issue with the people sat in front and the usher in the grand circle helped by moving us into stalls 6 rows from the front, so all in all amazing night friendly and helpful staff and fantastic production.

Forum Melbourne

Formerly the State Theatre, the Forum Melbourne first opened in 1929 with the largest seating capacity of any theatre in Australia. Since then the venue has been divided into two separate venues. Downstairs, Forum I is famous for its unique architecture, large stage, mesmerising proscenium and signature cabaret style booths. Upstairs, Forum II is a smaller venue with tiered seating, small stage, surround sound and cinema size screen. Renowned as one of Melbourne’s most unique and best live music venues, the Forum plays host to many bands, singers, comedians and popular festivals every year. When not being used for live music, the venue comes alive as an amazing function space for events such as cocktail parties, launches and fashion events.

Like most large venues in Melbourne. the Forum is managed by Mariner Group. The Forum, which was completed in 1929, can accommodate several thousand fans for live music, theatre, cinema, drama and events. A big line-up of live music is planned for 2021. The Forum is at the corner of Flinders St and Russell. Have a look, if only to take in the atmosphere.

The Regent Theatre

The landmark Regent Theatre holds a key part in our city’s history since opening as a grand picture palace in 1929. Having survived a fire, a flood, 20 years in darkness and many threats of demolition, the venue reopened in August 1996, meticulously refurbished and returned to its breathtaking former glory.Today it stands more lavish and grand than ever and continues to host some of the world’s most renowned theatre productions.
