Top 10 Classes & Workshops in Florence Historic Center, Tuscany

August 20, 2021 Leonardo Torrence

Florence is an art historian’s dream. The Galleria dell'Accademia bursts with works by Michelangelo, who is entombed within the frescoed walls of the Basilica di Santa Croce. Budding photographers can snap pics of the Ponte Vecchio bridge, and serious shoppers can spend a blissful afternoon wandering the shops of Piazza Santo Spirito. Tuscan cuisine pays homage to the region’s bounty. Swipe a hunk of crusty bread across a pool of local olive oil and you’ll be instantly transported to your happiest place.

Wanna be Italiano!

Our classes are offered as a view into a typical Tuscan cuisine. Classes are small and intimate. First step: grocery shopping at the central market!! You will go shopping with the chef at the central market picking up the ingredients for your lunch. You will meet the butchers, the bakers, and the farmers selling vegetables from their gardens. You will learn how to distinguish the highest quality ingredients and as an added bonus, how to bargain! You will taste local foods & wines. After this fun experience you will reach the house and start the lessons in a private kitchen. A true hands-on experience, and you will prepare your own meal, made of Bruschetta, Fresh Home-made Pasta, and a main course, accompanied with a selection of Chianti wines. As you will eat your own food, you’d better be an attentive student while the Chef is teaching!

This was a great experience. We could’ve skipped the marketplace in the morning but the cooking and endless wine drinking was fantastic. It was so satisfying making our pasta from scratch and seeing how to make 2 kinds of sauces. It was a ton of fun and my teenagers loved it. They can’t wait to get home and cook a meal!

InFlorence Academy

The school, the oldest state recognized school of foreign languages in Florence, can be found in Palazzo Guadagni, a Renaissance palace dating from the 16th century which is located in the middle of the old town centre near the Ponte Vecchio. The historic school building, renovated in 1992, has eleven classrooms, a multimedia learning centre, a lecture room and a student lounge and is in a quaint Italian quarter. The school is in the centre of the oldest part of Florence, 300 m from the Pitti Palace, 500 m from the Ponte Vecchio and about 15 minutes' walk from the cathedral (il Duomo) and from the railway station. The building is the work of the architect Cronaca and was built between 1502 and 1508. In the 1860's, it was extensively improved by the architect Poggi with the addition of beautiful frescoes. The school was completely renovated, taking care to enhance the original features but also making use of the best of modern Italian design to produce a stunning mix of new and old.

Cooking in Florence

Personal cooking class for small groups of family and/or friends. Wonderful.

My husband and I visited Italy last year and had the pleasure of spending an afternoon cooking, laughing, and learning with Laura of Cooking in Florence. Laura met us at the local farmers market where we discussed our favorite meals and ingredients, and chose seasonal produce to create our meal. We then walked to her beautiful kitchen where we enjoyed a glass of wine and began too cook! We started with learning to make a simple yet delicious bread, followed by cooking whole artichokes in a tomato sauce, then learned to make our own pasta for an outrageously delicious carbonara, and finished it all off with a decadent chocolate lava cake. We enjoyed our afternoon with Laura so much that we lost track of time and realized we would be late for our tickets to see the David. Laura kindly called ahead to the museum and explained the situation, safely securing our spot! Our time with Laura was one of the highlights of our trip to Florence and one who hope to repeat on our next trip.

Microfficina Gioielli

Microfficina is a workshop in the historical center of Florence, just a few steps far from the station “Santa Maria Novella”. But it’s not only a workshop, though. Microfficina is also a small creative studio and an art gallery where I exhibit my handmade and contemporary jewelry … A few square feet space where I can magically give such a wide space to my creativity!
