Brunswick Mechanic's Institute

Reviewed By 619jeffry - Essendon, Australia

In days gone by, "mechanics" did not fix cars, they were skilled tradesmen equivilent to civil and mechanical engineers. The Mechanics Institutes provided these men with libraries so they could upgrade their skills and improve their general education. Few Mechanics Institutes have survived but the Brunswick Mechanics Institute did. After extensive renovations, it is now the key community space for art and performance in the City of Moreland. It is managed by Next Wave and includes a theatre, communithy meeting room and a bar and lounge. The floorboards are varnished pine; the builders haave done a good job. Gandel Philanthropy helped get the project offf the ground.

Christ Church Brunswick

Reviewed By 619je - Keysborough, Australia

On first impression, one might think that Christ Church is a Catholic place of worship, as it is built in a Renassance style that would not be out of place in northern Italy. It is, however, a member of the Anglican Communion, following the Anglo-Catholic tradition. It is very hard to miss,. It is in Glenlyon Road, near the corner of Sydney Road. The Church has a Lady Chapel and several icons.

St Kilda Town Hall

Reviewed By 619jeffry - Essendon, Australia

The St Kilda Town Hall is a grand building, one of Melbourne's finest civic structures, Dating from the 1890s. it has been cursed by lack of funds and worst of all, the fire of 1991, which burnt out the inside of the Hall. The Hall was refurbished and it resumed its role as the social heart of St Kilda. It is now the headquarters of the City of Port Phillip, formed by the amalgamation of the Bay Area suburbs in 1994. The grand portico and the refurbished hall are amongst Melbourne's most famous sights, making St Kilda Town Hall a Melbourne icon. Rooms with a variety of dimensions, including the Council Chamber, are available for hire.
