St Elizabeth's Church

Reviewed By S5471CZgaryh - Budapest, Hungary

The baroque St, Elizabeth's Church is a "hidden gem" in the majestic historical City of Budapest. Living in this magnificent city, you are somewhat spoiled, by the number of places that are available to you, that people attend or visit as there place of worship. To stand and admire the truely architectural beauty of this church, from the Square of the Roses, is joyous and inspiring, capulated, through the masterful and brillance of the Hungarian architect - Imre Steindl. There is a gracefullness in this church building, elegent, a radience and softness in its message, that is captured enhanced by Steindl, in his vision, that you view in the external and internal architectural works and design of this church. The gentleness in design of this Church, named in honour of St.Elizabeth, could additionally be associated with the universally accepted interpretation of Elizabeth - God is Perfection - God is my Oath. The Gothic Rose Window that you can view from the front square of the church, is delightful, especially on entry into the church, looking at it in a reversed postion, the splintering of light colours and variations that are radient even celestial in the variable colours of light beams that are produced by this adorable window. Did this master of architectual design Steindl have a love even an infactuation with the name Elizabeth ? His remodelling reconstruction work on the Cathedral of St.Elizabeth in Kosice, is testament to this mans gifts and what we to-day in the 21st century people from all "stations in life" from all parts of the world, can view and admire. You will not be crushed in the "maddening crowds" vising St.Elizabeths in District V11, giving you time to admire, take in, explore possible, find your-self re-charged for what ever reason or purpose that may be. Its a melancholic place to spend time to sit and rest, externally or internally, taking time to "lisen to your body" then to move on. Remember to share in the richness of your visit to this hidden" icon" of this truely blessed City of Budapest and the embracing people of Hungary.

Church of Saint Laszlo

Reviewed By S5471CZgaryh - Budapest, Hungary

Church of St. Laszlo, was built between 1891-1897. St.Laszio, ironically is the Patron Saint of Architecture, which this magnificently designed Church does not fail him, in his patronage. Designed by the masterful Hungarian architect Odon Lechner 1845-1914, this Church is built in a style, at that time in Hungary known as szecesszio, but in the rest of Europe,as Art Nouveau, Lechner adorned the roofing decoration of the majority of his buildings, using tile patterns inspired by old Hungarian and Turkic folk art. Zsolnay Porcelaine & Ceramics of Pecs in Hungary, there supurb work of tiles and ceramics can be viewed to-day on this "Holy Place", along with other Lechner designed buildings in Hungary and Slovakia, in particular the Blue Church. To get the "zest" of the magnificence of the roofing colours St. Laszlo has for us to admire, stand off the Church, cross the utca, look from its front, its side, allowing for the sunlight to work its magical if not angelic gifts to truely capture the sharing or picture that I paint of this inspiring piece of Lechner architecture. In Medieval times, churches were designed to be "read", to tell the Christian story, to tell those unable to read, the story. Standing to me in St.Laszio, its silence its purpose, told me a story / Sir Christopher Wren, the Great British Architect - St.Pauls Cathedral, in the City of London, his master-piece, when asked at the completion of his work, the type of memorial he would like statue or whatever replied - " I have no such need other than for those to stand in the Nave of this Cathedral and look around them. That is is my memorial." The prestine internal and external condition of St. Laszlo, its manicured surrouding gardens, is a credit to ALL reasponsible for its presentation and up-keep. The statue of Odon Lechner and model of his work "fittingly" or rightfully is located in these garden settings, in a place that he would constantly view, his work and those who to made it all happen. To visit, read the history of this Holy Place of Worship - St. Laszlo, is up-lifting and inspiring. The excellent public transport system of this beautiful City of Budapest and Country of Hungary, makes for easy access by tram 3 or 28 from Keleti Railway Station to visit St. Laszio, and you arrive, practically in direct front of the Church. Do enjoy your visit.

History of the Inner-City Parish Church Budapest The foundations of the church lie partly on the remains of a Roman building. A military fortification, Contra Aquincum, used to stand on what is now Március 15 Square with the commander’s room stretching beneath today’s church. Archaeological excavations between 2014 and 2016 revealed the remains of a stone building with many separate rooms and brick flooring, part of which could be heated. The fort commander’s room was actively used until the middle of the 4th century. The ditch in the centre of the room was part of the hypocaust. In the 11th and 12th centuries the stones of the Roman fort were reused to build a Romanesque church, whose original foundation walls are still visible today in the crypt. The church was then converted in the 12th century. A wall of the church erected at that time is preserved in the northern tower and is the largest extant Romanesque wall in Budapest.

St Michael's Church

During our walk on the Vaci utca street, towards the covered market, we were surprised to discover a church on Budapest's main shopping street. My wife and I entered in order to visit and we were impressed by the church which was not large in its structure and our surprise was great. Although the church was small in size, its interior design and decoration were incredible. Prominent on the wall against the entrance, on the second-floor terrace, there was a beautiful church organ. The murals and frescoes as well as the furniture and sculptures were very impressive. In short, an amazing and unplanned surprise. In connection with the organ, a series of organ and choir concerts are held throughout the year. Anyone interested can find out on place regarding dates, prices and plans.
