Top 10 Churches & Cathedrals in Athens, Attica

July 31, 2021 Madelene Haan

Once known for smog, traffic and tacky architecture, Athens is a city reformed thanks to fortunes brought by the 2004 Summer Olympics. Spotless parks and streets, an ultra-modern subway, new freeways, an accessible airport and all signs in perfect English make the city easily negotiable. Meriting more than a stopover en route to the islands, sophisticated Athens sites include many pillars of Western history, from the Acropolis to the Temple of Olympian Zeus, as well as treasures in the National Archaeological Museum.

First evening strolling along busy Ermou it was delightful to see this gorgeous church come into view. It is a splendid contrast with the modernity of a busy central city thoroughfare. An entrance that is marvellously evocative of its era is just one impressive feature of the wonderful façade. Inside is lovely. Light streamed into the dome bringing to life the holy figures. A glistening sculpture of an eagle with outstretched talons atop a globe symbolises dispersing the Word to all humanity. Numerous frescoes and icons are captivating. An unpretentious iconostasis is a fitting divider of the inner sanctum from the congregation.

In the optimism following Independence from the Moslem Ottomans there was a concerted programme of church building. This great construct was started in the mid 1840s and the interior was finalised in the early 1890s. Standing opposite provides a marvellous vista of the expansive edifice in pleasing hues of lightness. A double belfry bound a pediment of simplicity with only a circle of bas-reliefs at centre. Stepping inside, even though only in ambient light, was to see impressive and inspiring features. A vista along the nave, bordered by columns and arches, brings one to the wonderful iconostasis. Frescoes and icons are at the spiritual core of the tranquil extensive space.
