We stopped here for lunch on our cycle round the forgensee. From the outside it looks mediocre but don't let this fool you. Inside it is warm and inviting. The traditional food is excellent. The veal and pork schnitzel were superb. My pancake with ham was delicious. All our group agreed it was the best home made traditional food we had in Bavaria and Austria.

Restaurant Bannwaldsee

This place actually serves as the restaurant for a huge campsite and caravan park situated north of Schwangau on the banks of the Bannwaldsee. It's apparently open to the public, and there's ample car parking outside the main campsite office. Not many people around when we visited one weekday evening. Restaurant is behind the admin block and has a nice veranda overlooking the campsite beer hall.We could see plenty of life inside the large, well-lit, dining room-cum-bar so we braved it and went in. I suspect that we probably stood out as not being from the camping fraternity or German, but we were eventually directed to a large table occupied by some other couples. Wouldn't say that the locals were all that friendly, in fact they seemed to find us rather curious. However, lively pub-type atmosphere soon resumed once we were settled in.The manager (who was quite cheerful and could speak a bit of english) gave us some menus, including a single page translation which contained just a specimen of what was on offer. We were happy to use the german version, and we subsequently both had schweinefilet grill i.e. 3 small pork fillets each and a mountain of fries. All perfectly ok with a big glass of pils to wash it down.Still feeling a little conspicuous, we didn't really feel inclined to prolong our stay by having desserts so paid up and left - glad to be able to get back outside again.

Fussen is a very attractive town but much of the food we encountered was perfectly acceptable 'tourist bland'. Madame Pluesch was different. A beautiful cosy venue and local cuisine - my mixed sausage plate was something to remember. The charming Bulgarian waitress worked so hard. You do need to book and we had to wait for the following day to get in but worth it.

This was an exquisite, lovely dining experience! We were staying at the hotel and this was a convenient choice for dinner on our first night there. However, this turned out to be a wonderful gem and we enjoyed dining there very much. The décor was warm and inviting, as was the service. The staff was incredibly well trained. Our service person was delightful – a perfect balance between humorous engagement and light conversation with the ability to step back so we were able to enjoy our meal. He was also incredibly familiar with the wine list & menu and was able to provide intelligent and well-considered recommendations for us. Something I always appreciate in restaurants. The food was very delicious. Created with what feels like the freshest of regional produce, and presented as if it was art on a plate. If you’re here during the day, you’ll also get to savour views of the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles while enjoying a great breakfast or lunch. They are busy here, especially on weekends. So if you wish to dine here for dinner on weekends, I would suggest making a booking. Schwangau is such a lovely area, still close to trendy and bustling Fussen but presents with a lot more tranquillity and quiet charm. If you’re not staying in Schwangau but still in the vicinity, I would suggest a short drive for a meal at Rubezahl - it’s fine dining at its best and we really enjoyed it.

It being Bavaria, I didn't have very high expectations for non-meat options. I was very pleasantly surprised. I ordered the local specialty - cabbage leaves stuffed with bread/mushroom/herb mix. The dish was absolutely amazing - large, very hot, served in a light sauce with sauteed vegetables. I wasn't that hungry but I polished it off! There were 3-4 other vegetarian options that looked amazing, and the woman next to me ate one of them - dumplings with local cheese and spinach. I could have easily returned 3-4 times to try all the others. There are many meat options too, of course. My husband's dish was served in a ceramic baking platter - I love when dishes are 'oven to table.' it was very delicious as well by his account. While the server didn't speak English, we did ok. Prices were reasonable and the atmosphere - vaulted ceilings, etc. was pleasant. We had a very nice time and from memory the meal was under EUR 40 - an unbelievable deal for the quality of food and the overall experience.

Certainly easy to spot in the dark; just off the main road through Schwangau and lit up like a beacon. Once there, note large car park across the road from the hotel. As it was night when we visited, we didn't really appreciate how attractive the building was. Traditional chalet style with a lot of structural wood, and with a good alpine view.We were not entirely sure how to present ourselves on arrival, so we reported to the hotel reception who then pointed us to the separate restaurant nearby. Plenty of large tables available in what seemed to be a sizeable semi-circular wood and glass conservatory, so we bagged a table for eight to ourselves. Having realised that we were Brits, a charming girl who spoke perfect english was deputed to look after us. As the menus were available in english too, it wasn't a difficult evening. Foodwise, ample alternatives of the robust teutonic variety which was fine by us.I went with the nicely-done pork medallions in a creamy mushroom sauce with schwabing dumplings whilst Mrs EPR exercised the unusual choice of grilled chicken breast in a sweet and sour sauce with spring rolls and wok-fried veg. Plus a bountiful bowl of fries between us. Not a lot left of that lot, I can assure you. Dessert choice equally good; who could refuse an "ice cream cake" - actually more like an ice cream cheesecake. I couldn't, and Mrs EPR's hot chocolate sponge pudding was equally good too.All dishes attractively presented, and efficiently served by the experienced waitresses who, I have to say, looked very fetching in their local costume. So a very successful evening in comfortable surroundings. Would certainly return.

Staff spoke English with great recommendations and there was a part of the menu in English. Food was amazing and the beers were even better. Needless to say we were sad to leave.

Alpstuben Buching

On our way back from the King's Castle, we were starving as we had skipped lunch to tour the castles. Alpenstuben Buching popped up as a viable option for our very late lunch (or early dinner) as we entered the Bavarian Dorf of Halblech. Alpstuben Buching is a quaint Bavarian Inn that boasts excellent local cuisine and rooms to accommodate weary travelers. The restaurant offers a moderately-priced menu of local dishes. The portions are quite generous and delicious. Simply stated our meals were "lekker." Although the indoor restaurant and bar looked inviting, we opted to enjoy the day outside under one of the umbrella-covered tables. The service was good, and our hosts were very accommodating. I knew what I was doing when I ordered the local Gulasch. I thought it woud be excellent... and it was. The meat was tender, and laden with subtle hints of paprika and majoram. Since I was driving, I limited myself to a few sips of the local beer. Loved it!The outside dining offers an excellent vista of the looming Alps and rolling foothills. Alpenstuben Buching would make for a memorable romantic weekend with someone special. This fine little inn comes highly recommended.
