The Bandia wildlife reserve is a real ecological jewel in the crown of Senegal. It has succeeded in reintroducing much of the marvellous native flora and of some of Africa’s best loved animals. Many of which had gradually disappeared, some of them centuries ago, due to demographic pressure and poaching. With the exception of the big carnivores, you will be able to see most of the best-known African animals: white rhinoceros, zebra, giraffe, buffalo, giant eland, Cape eland, Oryx, roan antelope, waterbuck, western Buffon’s cob, greater kudu, nyalas, impalas, damas gazelle, red fronted gazelle, warthog, patas monkey, green vervet monkey, jackal, mongoose, crocodiles, giant tortoise, ostrich,and many more, as well as over 120 species of bird.

This perfect 2-day combination will give you first-hand knowledge of the city of Dakar with a visit to all of the highlights that make the city one of the finest in West Africa. We will also have the opportunity to end our first day with a visit to GOREE island, a touchtone on history. A visit to the SLAVE HOUSE will give you a vision of African Slaves being led onto the ship in chains crying and yelling for mercy. The second day will take us to Bandia animal reserve. On a safari Jeep, we will be spotting Rhinos, Giraffes, Zebra, Gazelles, monkeys, and many more. The drive offers excellent views of rural life. I will answer your questions while drawing your attention to the sights you will be enjoying along the way. Then, proceed to the Pink Lake to experience how salt collectors harvest the salt from the lake, put it in small boats, women unload it, and pile it up. Enjoy the view of mounds of cooking salt.

Oumar is an AMAZING professional! You’re lucky if you can ever find a guide who has both this much energy and knowledge about his topic. His English is excellent, his driver is competent and qualified, and this is a PRIVATE TOUR (wasn’t clear to me when booking, you have his undivided attention). If you have specific needs, sites you want to visit (or not) let him know and he will adjust the tour for you. I have a special diet and cannot eat most foods, and Oumar got me a bag of fresh fruits. Not interested in churches or mosques so we skipped them. Everyone on Goree Island knows him, and he thoughtfully advised on how to interact with the locals as they try to sell me stuff. Try the local Baobob drink. It’s sweet, you’ll love it!

It was hard to find an organisation that makes tours both through Senegal and Gambia. Triptours did a good job, but at the high end of the price rage for relatively cheap locations, unlike we are used to travelling in Asian countries. Realise that your guide should be bi-lingual (French and English) if you want to see both countries. The roads are surprisingly good, so your car can easily drive 100km/h. That is the good news. The bad news is that there is not much to see or do. And if you are at a location like Georgetown or Kuntaur, these are backwaters in the heat with minimal attractions. Anyhow, it was an interesting trip in an old (>12 years) car without airco. The guide, Alpha, was knowledgeable, but more up to date with Senegal than with Gambia. In general, all guides we have seen are more socialising than in Asia. They will f.i. share your meals. Make sure that you check Triptours' advise regarding hotels, you might find better alternatives, such as Sindola Safari Lodge (advisable) and Kinkeliba lodge in Mar Lodj. We finished in Mar Lodj, waiting for a flight out due to the corona crisis. Triptours proved helpful with information, but in the end we escaped with our regular flight after an interesting two weeks.

I spent hours looking for the appropriate experience, booked this and a couple of seconds after booking I received a cancellation email from the operator without an explanation for the cancellation. This means that my money will be blocked while the refund is processed, never mind the time spent exploring their adds, and some money (not much, but some) will be lost on currency conversions. Senegal Excursions strikes me as an unreliable experience provider, whimsical in their business organisation, and providing uncertainty rather than the safety of trust.

Lamine was absolutely amazing! He was so knowledgeable, very passionate historian and educator. He was very patient and took his time answering thoroughly. I’ve visited and he was able to accommodate German, French and English translations of the history of the region. He was very clear about his own personal journey and Senegal and was able to give a very critical thought for perspective on culture, politics, globalization and then As well religion and the relationship between humanity and philosophies of economic development. He demonstrated humility, humor, patience, and fortitude with designing our tour schedule to accommodate flexibility And difficulty with my luggage. He made excellent food recommendations, and was also able to take pictures and facilitate taking pictures with the locals. Because he is well known for his good standing in the urban and suburban community, and the tourism sector, it was very easy to be the guests that he was helping and many people bargained with us with even more rigor because of our connection to him. Very much so I appreciate all of the care, the history, the passion, the knowledge that was demonstrated and it really helped us to assimilate into Senegalese culture on a very short trip. I am honored and so is my mother. When he grabbed us from Magic land, and the way that he introduced himself and explained how everything was going to work, I knew from that moment that we were in very good hands and very good company. I never thought that I would like Dakar that much with some nice people and relatively good products sold in the market. Goree Island is a place of great history; a must must visit.
