Kumbakonam is known as the city of temples and this temple is one of the main highlights of the temple town of Kumbakonam. A majestic Shiva temple situated in the heart of the city. The temple is huge and very well maintained. The highlight of our visit was the elephant blessing the devotees near the temple entrance. What an intelligent being! If a parent went with a child for the blessing, he blessed the child first. Happy to see such traditions still being maintained.

We covered this temple as part of our trip to cover all Navagraha temples around Kumbakonam. This happens to be the first temple out of the 9 lot, to reach from Kumbakonam, which lies at a distance of around 15 kms. The entrance of the temple leads to Shiva temple (known as Kasi Viswanathar) where he resides in the form of lingam and the Sun God shrine is to the right from Shiva temple. One can offer prayers to Lord Sun for good health and eyesight, intelligence, skin ailments, offering lotus as offerings. Avoid the shops which invite you to leave footwear at their shop to induce you into buying from them. You can safely leave your footwear outside the temple. Car parking space is available at Rs 20 and convenient.
