Riesling Trail Bike Hire

Reviewed By GongMum - New South Wales, Australia

Quality, new, clean e-bikes and helmets at a fair price. Good bike lock provided. The Riesling Trail is a most worthwhile, beautiful cycling trail. Allow a whole day to take it all in - plenty of wineries, cafés, villages and a great deal of history. A great business to deal with. Highly recommended. Thank you, Kent!

Riesling Trail

Reviewed By kpiddy - Brisbane, Australia

A wonderful way to explore the Clare Valley and the vineyards on foot or bike is along the Riesling Trail, a repurposed railway line, which stretches thirty three kilometres between Auburn and Barinia. Due to limited time and extreme weather conditions, high temperatures and winds, we had to cancel our half-day plans to hike south from Clare to discover the nearby countryside and vineyards. Instead we parked our car near the 'Mob of Sheep' outdoor installation and hiked south for fifteen mnutes fortunately mostly in the shade then back. Disappointing for us but on our future travel list.

Sevenhill Cellars

Established by the Jesuits in 1851, Sevenhill Cellars is the oldest winery in South Australia's Clare Valley and the only Jesuit-owned winery in Australia. Originally established to produce altar wine, Sevenhill is now recognised for its premium table wines, which express the Clare Valley's distinctive varietal characteristics. The historic winery and cellar door, St Aloysius' Church, the College building, surrounding vineyards and spiritual sites give visitors an opportunity to combine appreciation of exceptional wines with an understanding of Sevenhill's religious and historic significance. You can discover this rich heritage by following our walking trail using a self-guided map, which are available at Cellar Door.

Mitchell Wines

One of the stalwarts of the Clare Valley, established by Jane and Andrew Mitchell in 1975, producing long-lived rieslings and cabernet sauvignons in classic regional style. The range now includes very creditable semillon, grenache and shiraz. A lovely old stone apple shed is the cellar door and upper section of the upgraded winery. Children Angus and Edwina are now working in the business, heralding generational changes. Over the years the Mitchells have established or acquired 75ha of vineyards on four excellent sites, some vines over 60 years old; all are managed organically, with biodynamic composts used for over a decade. Exports to the UK, the US, Canada, Denmark, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and NZ.

BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL My wife and I stayed in the Stalling Box for two nights in the beautiful Bungaree Station. The main room comprises of a queen bed, open fire and a small kitchen (which was stocked with a good range of pots, pans, utensils etc). It was a very private and quite place to chill out in. The open fire in the room was lovely and essential as the temperature outside dropped to around 0. The location was good (about 10 kms) from Clare but you need to make sure that you bring all the bits and bobs that you want as there are no shops within walking distance and none of the restaurants would deliver food to us. This was not an issue for us as we just went to the shops in the morning before our wine tastings. Bungaree Station is absolutely beautiful with lovely grounds and a myriad of animals to observe. It certainly feels like a throw back to a bygone era and has been maintained so very well. Vicki (owner) was super helpful, friendly and lovely to chat to. I'd highly recommend Bungaree Station for a couples wanting a quite relaxing get-away and for larger groups with kids. We will definitely be back but with our kids next time.

Crabtree Watervale Wines

Crabtree Watervale Wines produce small parcels of award winning handcrafted wines by people who love what they do. Visit our cellar door open seven days. Crabtree is a boutique estate winery, with the annual crush around one hundred tonnes. The tiny winery is at full capacity every vintage, and the wines very limited in production.

With so many vineyards to choose from in the Clare Valley we were happy to accept the recommendation from a local in Burra to visit Crabtree Watervale Wines cellar door just a short walk up the hill from the other gem in Watervale, the Watervale General Store. Crabtree Watervale cellar door has a small and cosy air-conditioned indoor room and an outdoor covered terrace, both with gorgeous views over the vineyards and surrounding countryside. On the afternoon of our visit Petrie gave us a great cellar door experience with fun conversations to accompany our wine tasting, she was knowledgable about the vineyard and its wines and most friendly. Again many thanks Petrie for a delicious and relaxing experience. Highly recommend.

I called ahead, because I was travelling with my two dogs. I was allowed to walk through the indoor area to the deck, where I had a lovely coffee. I liked it so much, we all went back the next (hot) day. Not only were the ladies welcoming, they went above and beyond: offering a bowl of water for my dogs. For me, when in Clare...drink Riesling. I highly recommend this place and gratefully thank the staff for being such gracious hosts.
