December 4, 2021 Mollie Coke

Forty miles south of Tampa and just seven miles west of Bradenton, Anna Maria is a paradise island. With the Gulf of Mexico to the west, Tampa Bay and Anna Maria Sound to the east and Sarasota Bay to the south, the seven-mile-long tropical island is a gem, with beautiful white-sand beaches on all sides and a year-round population of just 1800. The island was originally discovered by the Timucan and Caloosan Native Americans and then by Spanish explorers.

We walked in under a recommendation from an advert a friend had seen. We soon got talking with the owner who had more knowledge on his stones and their provenance than we could imagine as well as being very nice and welcoming. Photos of the people sourcing the stones and fossils on display are hung in each section showing their story. Despite it being a small store there’s so much displayed floor to ceiling that it took well over an hour to look at it all without counting the great conversation we had. Conclusion: - well located - vast selection of stones with more available off site - truly local, very cute and a refreshing atmosphere - get talking - you’ll learn a lot! - couldn’t recommend it more!

A small nature park on Anna Maria Island perfect for relaxing walks.

My husband and I felt very safe at the coquina beach bay walk today. I forgot to take my camera, so we will have to go back to capture the magic! I look forward to taking my grandchildren and sharing the very impressive educational signage! The walks through the mangroves was absolutely magical. We were there at low tide so we could see the mangrove roots with barnacles on them. The filtering power of their root system was quite visible! Do not miss this hidden gem!

Bean Point

This is a beautiful spot, right on the northern end of Anna Maria Island. Parking is scarce (we found one close, due to a nice local who let us park in front of their home), but there is a public park just over 1/2 mile down, which you can park at, and walk to Bean Point. We went one evening for a lovely sunset, and then again during the daytime. You have excellent views of downtown St. Petersburg, and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge on the Tampa Bay side, and also nice beach area on the Gulf of Mexico. This is a MUST DO, on any trip to Anna Maria Island!

I have been visiting the island for the past 6 years and recently purchased a vacation home there after falling in love with "Florida's Best Kept Secret". It wasn't till this year that I had made my first visit to this museum with a friend due to a little shower that had set in. I wish I would have made the visit earlier. For being a small museum it was filled with such rich and interesting history. I am very excited to be returning this month and hoping to snag some of the famous settlers bread that everyone is talking about...along with taking the hubby to see all the interesting history. Next time you are on the island....DON'T walk past this gem....it will make you love the island even more!

We enjoyed a nice, leisurely walk out to the pier. Although it was a very hot day, the views we saw made up for that! Very quiet, loved watching the fisherman and the pelicans!
