Had a wonderful lunch at lanes with friends. Lovely building, a sympathetically converted chapel with tables on different levels so that you never felt crowded or overheard. We were made so welcome and service was exceptional. It was difficult to choose from the tempting options on the menu . I had a very tasty stuffed mushroom starter , delicious and perfectly cooked smoked haddock with a butter sauce and veg main and a creme brûlée dessert . A plate of petit fours to share with happy birthday written in chocolate arrived with our coffee . Which was a lovely surprise and a very generous gesture from the restaurant .Really special lunch , we all enjoyed our meals and the friendly ambience. We will be back !

The Smugglers Inn

Reviewed By John W

It is some while since we last visited this pub, some of the staff may have changed, but it still retains its friendly and efficient 'ye olde worlde' atmosphere. This time, we stopped by for a 'snack' lunch (sorry, did I say snack?) My wife ordered a jacket potato stuffed with beans which came with a good sized pot of coleslaw and salad garnish. I think that the jacket potato alone must have been delivered on the back of a low loader, it was BIG and well cooked. She could only consume half of what was there and although she offered me the remainder, what I was confronted with was enough to keep me busy for quite a while.I had a sausage and marmalade baguette with chips and salad garnish. Two large and tasty sausages had been crammed into the baguette so it was positively bulging. The chips were well cooked and not greasy. With a 'snack ' of this magnitude it meant that we had to cancel our usual evening meal.In contrast to the Lazy Lion 150 metres away, where you get a very different atmosphere, clean and bright with good friendly service (almost trendy) but in comparison to the Smugglers it disappears without a trace when it comes to value for money. Both are pretty much even stevens with regards to quality of food, so really the only choice you need make is value for money (zero here) and style of atmosphere.

I am so disappointed to have had to write this review but have been here many times for evening dinner and Sunday lunches and has always been so good that I have recommended this place , but unfortunately tonight was awful. From start to finish the service and food Was appalling .Drinks order not correct , ordering another round of drinks took half an hour , the food was disgusting my friend had salmon which was lukewarm and had what could only be described as a dried out piece of shoe leather , but we were told it was a rosti.Soup was served no spoon was with it had to track one down ourselves , I had chicken curry which looked as bad as it tasted and I just had to leave it all .The flatbread with it looked as if it had been left out for a day or two was totally stale .Not once were we asked if everything was ok and clearly the waitress must have known as we said we have been waiting half an hour for our drinks .Also when the waitress took my food away it was untouched but nothing to ask if anything was wrong .The attitude of the waitress was couldn’t care less . I actually did say to one of the waitresses what’s gone wrong here as always been good here but I explained it’s been awful from the service to the food and she said she would let the manager know .No manager ever came over too see us except when we paid the bill and she said I’ve taken a round of drinks off for the drink mix up and haven’t charged you for the curry that you didn’t eat .I think that was very poor considering the whole evening was a total wipe out .The manager who is usually there when I have been is a man called Darren but he was not in tonight unfortunately as he has always ensured good service and good food .its a shame as I will not be going back again or the other three people that also came said never again .

After arriving in Milford my friend and I were looking forward to popping in here for a quick glass of wine before walking up to Master Pinks for a fish and chip supper. We ran through the rain to find shelter in the reasonably busy bar, quickly found a table and waited. And waited some more. I eventually wandered up to the bar to see if I could order a drink there, but before I could say anything the (rather flustered and over stretched) waitress gave me 2 seconds of eye contact before saying -“You can take a seat, we will be with you when We’re ready”. A rather abrupt and unnecessary greeting, a quick “I’ll be with you shortly” or even the original statement with a smile would have gone down a lot better. Despite the unpleasant start I returned to the table and we sat and waited. And waited some more. After waiting a total around 20 minutes we still hadn’t been approached or given any sign that the staff were even close to being ready to offer us drinks, so we decided to give up waiting and move on to the chippy. Not the greatest customer service, not even that great a wine list by the glass. It’s a shame, as there seems to be plenty of potential for this place with other reviews. Maybe I’ll give it another go next time I’m near by. Hi RichardThank you for your honest review. Really sorry you didn't experience our consistent excellent customer service on this occasion which we are renowned for, however i'm sure we can make amends should you give us another chance. We look forward to seeing you again next time you wait for Fish and chips.

We like a morning coffee but as our usual place when in these parts is closed on a Monday we tried here. Lucky for us we drove into Milford, found on street parking (many short stay spaces), and on appearance alone walked in. Friendly welcome and prompt service. Coffee pleasant enough as was our choice of cake. Looked and tasted like homemade which is always preferable to the sugary commercially bought alternatives. Although busy good we didn’t feel rushed by staff and although we didn’t have a cooked breakfast they looked great and good value. We will return to try in future. This is a great cafe, although tiny, in the a central location. A super review, thank you very much, your comments and observations for our little Cafe are very welcome. and perhaps we can earn a 5 "star" rating after you've sampled our very popular Breakfast menu on your next visit..

Visited this cafe based on the positive reviews on Trip Advisor and it didn’t disappoint. We were lucky in grabbing the last table for four as it was busy on a Saturday afternoon. The menu was extensive with lots of different options, with a good focus on local ingredients too. I wished I could have tried more like the local bacon or sausage sandwich but this time round we went for the Buddha Bowl with halloumi and the smoked salmon bagel. The portions were very generous and the quality of ingredients shone through. It was a little wait but well warranted as our lunches made from scratch. The staff were warm and friendly and the atmosphere was cosy too. Next time I would save room for either one of the cakes or a delicious sounding milkshake. Well worth a visit! We are glad you enjoyed your visit, thank you for your kind comments about the food and service

We had a short break stay at the South lawns Hotel . Our second visit . This time we dined at the restaurant. The menu was varied but we opted for the set menu options . We both had a fish starter. Presentation was excellent , the portion size was just right and it tasted fresh. I had the ham pie and my husband the whole sea bass. Again , tasty and excellent value. We couldn't resist the whiskey sponge pudding ! All in all we would thoroughly recommend the dinning experience. Not that we had a dog but they had a separate area for dinners with dogs. Inclusive of wine and a beer together with the 3 courses it came to a total of £52.00 for two. Staff were attentive and service was prompt. Superb! We are pleased to read you enjoyed your dining with us and thank you for your review. We hope to see you again soon.

Wine was also very good (albeit expensive as always) and every plate was virtually licked clean. Verveine was an excellent discovery to which we shall undoubtedly return - and soon!
