I was here in 2017 and the restaurant seemed to have been abandoned but I'm pleased to see it is open again and apparently doing a thriving trade, even during the week. The staff are welcoming and helpful and our meals were delicious. Gluten free is available although not many options. The main attraction is of course the view and grab a window seat if possible. You will not want to leave.

We stopped at this restaurant during a small guide tour. The tour guide ordered ahead so everything was ready when we arrive. We were in the dining room with a great view. There were several nice gluten free options. I had the quinoa chickpea salad with chicken which was delicious and a big portion- I did not need to add the chicken.

I wandered into this cafe a little by accident. I highly recommend the protein and salad plate - all of the food was a revelation. Really good quality and much better than I would have expected. If I lived in Wollongong this would become my go-to lunch place. Great service too!

Ordered seafood platter for 3. Scallops were way overcooked and tough, very unpleasant to eat so we left them. Bbq octopus also very tough. Lobster was nicely cooked but drowning in mornay sauce so you could barely taste the lobster. Salt & pepper calamari, kilpatrick oysters and moreton bay bugs were delicious. Lovely service. Thanks for your feedback, overcooked seafood and too much sauce is never pleasant. We’ve passed on your message to the kitchen to see what went wrong. Don’t forget, our chefs are always happy to hear from you during your meal, so they can fix any problems on the spot and make sure you leave happy. We hope you give us another try soon.

Rookie Eatery

Stumbled on the restaurant looking for a late lunch. We sat outside which was lovely as the restaurant is an old house elevated. The service was discreet and appropriate. The menu not extensive. We ordered several appetisers and entree which was so fresh and beautifully presented. I would definitely go for dinner. The only disappointment was they did not serve coffee which was an abrupt end to the meal. The peanut parfait for desert was to die for.A great place for that special meal.

We called in for a quick snack and found the service to be wonderful. We ordered the natural oysters, which were fresh and sweet and came with a nice, light sauce that went perfectly. We also ardered the sashimi tasting plate for two, which was amazing! A good combination of textures and flavours that made me wish we had ordered one each.

In Wollongong on business and chose Lower East Cafe for lunch. Very quirky menu offering foods that are anything but the 'norm!' I had 'Bitter Sweet': basically a salad with red cabbage, lettuce, capers, walnuts, mandarin, marinated cabbage, a beautiful dressing plus I optioned halloumi: very enjoyable! Lower East have a reputation for superb coffee, although I didn't indulge today. Multi-cultural Wollongong serves up a winner!

Caveau

Reviewed By RodJohnButler

Exceptional and creative food - that’s what you expect from a hatted restaurant like Wollongong’s Caveau, and that’s what you get. What takes the restaurant to the next level is the singular vision that runs through your whole experience. Celebrating local produce is not a new concept, but creating something unique while also stirring memories of classic Australian fare - that’s truly an accomplishment. For example, the damper may be the best damper that you’ve ever tasted, but the fact that it’s served on a bowl of smoldering gum leaves that reminds you of every camp fire you’ve ever had - that’s when nostalgia mixes with new flavours in a way that leaves you feeling both comfortable and inspired. Other dishes, like magpie goose prove the restaurant’s commitment to working closely with their suppliers to understand and celebrate unique products (they are one of only three restaurants in the country to use this ingredient and it’s supplied by the only licensed provider in Australia). The restaurant is also focused on reducing food waste and works with the charity Hidden Harvest to provide regular community dinners from food that otherwise would have been thrown out. This approach is also used in their restaurant where little goes to waste. In other words, every single aspect of your experience has been thought through and is an expression of the owners’ values and vision. The honey on your dessert isn’t just there for sweetness - it comes from the chef’s personal hives - hives that have been in his family for generations and that help to protect the survival of the European honey bee that has been destroyed in other parts of the world. When that level of attention to detail and personal commitment goes into something as simple as honey, you know that you’re involved in something very special. If you only go to one restaurant this year, make sure that it’s Caveau.
