China Star

Have driven past many times, and never saw much activity. But, the place stays in business, so either it has to have a sufficient amount of business or the owners do this as a "hobby", after all, at some point you need to pay the bills. So decided to check it out. From the outside this appears to be a "second thought", plenty of parking in the lot, and the outside of the building is anything but inviting. Walk in the door and the place strikes you as being something marginal, pulled together with little thought to how a restaurant should appear, sort of a feeling of a bad dream of someone who thought that they would "play at being a restaurant". Only one employee was visible during our visit, she was very attentive, and cordial. We walked in to find one customer finishing his meal and one customer who had just ordered. There is a lot of space spread across three serving areas, the place was clean, but seemed to be furnished from something other than a restaurant supply house.BUT, then the food arrived. The presentation is great! The plates are plentiful. So many times "Chinese" restaurants present plates that really minimize the proteins, this restaurant honors the proteins, presents them with honor, e.g. they do not present the chicken or scallops as thin slices, rather as the entire piece. There is a great balance of protein to vegetables, the vegetables being crisp and the sauce being (obviously) made from scratch rather than scooped from a jar.Our choices were the Appetizer Scallion Pancakes and the Szechuan Three Delights. The pancakes had a complex flavor profile, was light yet an order was a pretty good meal. The Three Delights had full sized shrimp and scallops, and large chances of chicken, a great amount of vegetables, but, the star of the dish was the sauce, light yet a hint of hot ... I thoroughly enjoyed this dish in that the flavors were complex, as were the textures, and the balance of proteins and veggies, as well as the quality of the proteins. Flavors were complex and clean, obviously prepared for the order, this was an incredible dining experience, the type of which you "hope and dream", before you discover this place you hope that some day you will be allowed to find a place that serves such food, and afterward you dream of the meal that you experienced and then look forward too the next meal that you will experience there, troubled by the memory of what you had, and wishing that you could again experience such, but also knowing that everything else must be as good, so faced with the quandary of not knowing what to order next, knowing that it all will be incredible ... Most Chinese meals end with a plastic wrapped cookie, with fortune inside. I was disappointed in that all of the other food aspects of my experience screamed "homemade" and I really expected a homemade fortune cookie. Instead I received plastic wrapped cookies and canned pineapple, the pineapple was a nice touch, but the presentation was the antithesis of the meal experience. you exit, there is no ramp, rather a drop down step immediately on the other side of the door. Be careful so that you do not get hurt!Note that there is a ramp for handicapped entrance, it is to the left, as you face the building.

WOK Wok is mostly for take out, although there are several tables and booths available that are nicely spread out. Everything looks fairly clean. I ordered combination platter #13, Pork egg foo young which came with (my choice) of pork fried rice and one egg roll. I also got a large order (6) of beef teriyaki. The man waiting on me was not particularly friendly but got the order right and cooked it promptly. When my grandson and I got home and tasted it everything was just as we hoped and expected. Good!

Young newlyweds have taken over the Golden Palace but continued the tradition of plentiful portions and friendly service. This is our go-to place for good Chinese food when we're hungry NOW. The large lunch buffet is always freshly made, with something for everyone's taste. If anything, the food is even better with the new owners ever so timidly offering selections on the buffet that go beyond what those of us who have been regulars for years expect. The egg fu yung is loaded with fresh vegetables and the best I have ever tasted. They have added a sweet spicy meatball to the buffet as well as the traditional sesame chicken, General Tso's, Szechuan, kung pao and broccoli chicken, mushroom beef, 2 kinds of lo mein, 2 kinds of rice, 2 kinds of soup, Peking dumpling, chicken fingers, boneless ribs, teriyaki, egg rolls, chicken wings, crab rangoon, shrimp, and more... Hungry yet?

We have been here for the buffet a few years ago. We have never seen a buffet in which you pick what you want from the menu and the server brings it to you. It is all you can eat. This time we tried the hibachi grill and their sushi. The chef was very talented and put on a great show. The fried rice was good. My companion appreciated that no peas or corn were included, two vegetables she cannot digest and must pick out of fried rice in other establishments. The Sapura chicken she ordered was a bit rubbery. This is not the fault of the restaurant; we are encountering the rubbery, woody chicken more and more, a problem that has been cited in the culinary news recently. My grilled salmon was very good. It was prepared from sushi-grade fish. Our sushi was also good, but no better than what we have bought in local grocery stores prepared by a sushi chef on the spot. The worst part of the meal was the salad. It consisted of a pile of brown iceberg lettuce plus one cucumber slice, drowned in a heavy sauce. We could eat only a few bites and left the rest. The tab came to over $71 with tip. There are no special lunch prices for the hibachi food, unlike at competitors. We will come back for the buffet sometime when we are extremely hungry. But there are plenty of other sources of sushi and other hibachi places in the area that compare to, if not surpass what we found.Food = 3Service = 5Value = 3Overall = 3

Sometimes, the Jade is a solid B+ restaurant. Sometimes, the food is really not great. I've discovered their Chinese is more consistent than the sushi, but I pretty much don't come here anymore unless a family member or friend suggests it.
