During our tree weeks trip to Georgia, we attended multiple monasteries and churches. Shio-Mgvime Monastery is an amazing and a peaceful place, far away from the tourist hustle. We were lucky to meet a monk in Mtsheta who recommended to take a drive to Shio-Mgvime Monastery as he was from this Monastery, so we came with him together. We were worried it would be too far but it’s not a long drive from Mtsheta; plus it’s a nice drive. Highly recommended.

Coming from the town of Jvari you must drive uphill into the reserve around Inguri Dam. There is a parking lot but some cars can go further, to where the buildings are. They were closed when we were there. The dam itself is monumental. It is an awe-inspiring construction from the Soviet era that took around 30 years to finish. The lake is embedded into the beautiful surrounding nature. The colour of the water is attractive. From here you can go on exploring the upward Valley of the river whose flow is stopped by the dam. Downwards The Valley is not attractive at all.
