Very tasty indian food in a small restaurant close to waterfront.
Friendly staff, and fast service also. We were happy with both starters, mains and naan, and portions are quite sizy so no room for desserts I'm afraid :)
Quite expensive for indian even for Norway, but all in all worth the price.
Would prefer the restaurant to dim their lights i bit to make a better athmosphere, I believe thats the only thing I really would change at the place.

Came here for drinks and the service was quick and pleasant. We ordered a passion fruit drink and it was delicious. A little garnish would have added to the appearance. The price was steep, as expected in Norway. I've been to this restaurant before and have found it to be a consistently pleasant experience. I was glad to see smokers exit the outdoor patio area so as to not disturb the other diners and that is greatly appreciated. I would recommend this restaurant for both food and drinks.

Not fantastic, not poor, just good fish and chips. No salad but three pieces of fish plus mayonnaise. Service was pleasant and attentive. Still getting head around prices of food here compared to Australia. This meal was 198 NOK - about A$30 and for same meal back home it would BT A$20 - c'est la vie!!!

Used to love the pizza at Peppes. They have changed the interior of the place, it looks better. However the food is not as good as it used to be. The service is not good, ended up not giving a tip.

Having lived here for a long time it's about strange that I have never eaten here. The Roast beef Sandwich was full of interesting flavors as was my colleagues chicken salad. In addition my other colleagues had three different pizzas which they were happy with. If you take into account the lunch time offer this all adds in to a good lunch. Very happy competent waiter completed the experience.

Taj Mahal

Cosy, authentic Indian restaurant in the heart of Tonsberg. With both, menu and à la carte. Opened 5.februar 2011. The restaurant also has its own Take-Away menu.

Reviewed By Norjanpoika - Tonsberg, Norway

A snowy day, just after the holiday season in Tønsberg, we decide to take a break from the Norwegian Christmas traditional food and go for some Indian experiences. I was here some weeks ago on a busy working day, and was happy with the food and decided to return for a private dinner.
We came on a Sunday. We book a table in advance, but they don't greet us with "welcome mr. ... and ms ...".
The waiter knew nothing about the food. He could not explain when I asked "what is special about the coastal spices" or "what gives color to the yellow in the rice." We asked details about the Palak Paneer veggie dish, and he new nothing more than "we sell that quite a lot of that". The Nan bread was flat and below average. The green sauce following the Papadums was too mild. The deep-fried onions came with a tamarind sauce that probably was straight out of a bottle. The raita was far too runny, almost like water.
The tender and spicy chili chicken was really tasty, as was the rice. The Palak Paneer was also a slight disappointment (dull looking and the cheese was dry and definitely not home made), but tasted ok.
To sum up, Taj Mahal is not living up to its name taken from the fantastic "crown of palaces", the one built in 1631 by emperor Shah Jahan to honor princess Mumtaz Mahal who died during the birth of their 14th child, Gauhara Begum. Shah Jahan would turn in his grave if he knew that a restaurant, almost on the North Pole, named after the palace he initiated, served water and wine in Ikea glasses, and had cheap paper serviettes for their distinguished guests.
This establishment seems to rest on its laurels after having received splendid reviews before. Now they seem to have fallen asleep, and ended up by giving us visitors too little of the experience we come to have, such as a STORY connected to the food we have, an insisting waiter who could die for his job, a feeling of being VIP in a sleepy town 100kms South of the capital city of Oslo.
Please, Taj Mahal. Next time we expect better. And the smashed mailbox outside the main entrance with the tip-ex painted address... you could afford a better one. We alone paid for more than the price of two mailboxes tonight.

Cafe Babels

Coffeeshop and lunch place with tasty food and fresh coffee. They also have a large selection of cakes. Unpretentious place with a cozy and warm atmosphere.

Reviewed By Norjanpoika - Tonsberg, Norway

This cafe is a lively place on Saturdays, packed with people. Despite that, the place has a relaxed ambience. The food is good for norwegian cafe-standards, and the prices are average. But they need "the little extra" to lift them from an average-rating. Their pre-fabricated pizza-buns is one example. Every place serving pizza should make it from scratch. The so-called famous chili-burger is also OK, but not more (and where is the chili?), and for some reason they serve it in a grand, deep pasta-plate, which makes it impossible to eat with knife and fork. From before, the burger is uneatable with hands. When we are with friends or family visiting a cafe, we want delicate food that is easy to eat without looking rediculous.
You have to pick up your drinks yourself at the desk (why?), and the food is served at the table. But the ones who serve do not always know who shall have the food, so they walk around the restaurant saying loudly "who shall have this pizza? And this Chicken-salad?". A little disturbing and definitely unnecessary.
The location is close to perfect, and it could have been even better, if the crossroad outside the large windows were turned into a little pedestrians plaza. In this Summer-city, this plaza could have been giving this corner of the town status as "little Italy". Just remove the cars, put up a Fountain and a statue of someone important, and then lay down some cobblestones and you're there. I hereby urge the cafes and restaurants in the block to convince the politicians in the town.
If Babels Cafe move out in the street in the little plaza during Summer, almost no-one can beat them. Especially if they sharpen their menu, and get some specialities they can be really proud of.

Bare Barista Coffeshop

THE PLACE TO GO FOR GOOD COFFEE! Bare Barista coffee shop was established in Tonsberg in March 2009. This is a charming place with personality and a pleasant backyard. The Coffeeshop also offers breakfast, lunch, cakes and take away. In addition they have a wide selection of coffee and tea in loose weight for sale.

Reviewed By Stian L - Oslo, Norway

Bare Barista is all about the coffee, and they sure know their stuff when it comes to serving a good cup. It's more of a coffeeshop than a cafe, though some food is served. A nice variety of high quality coffee is also sold, along with some coffeemaking appliances.
The interior of the coffeeshop may not stand out as anything special. However the backyard of the Bare Barista is a nice escape from the buzz of the city, especially on a sunny day.
I will most likely visit Bare Barista every time I'm in Tonsberg and feel the urge for coffee!!
