Tlayacapan Food Guide: 10 Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Tlayacapan

February 17, 2018 Claudia Navarrete

Tlayacapan (Spanish   (help·info)) is a town and a municipality located in the northeast part of Morelos state in central Mexico. It is located 60 km east from the state capital of Cuernavaca and about 1.5 hours south of Mexico City. It is a rural area, whose way of life has not changed much over the 20th century, with 90% of its population still partially or fully dependent on agriculture. The town has old mansions, houses with red tile roofs and streets paved with stones. Many ravines crisscross the area and are crossed by numerous stone bridges.

Enjoy the tranquility of this small town. the hotel and restaurant La Mayordomia is really beautiful. It has a huge garden where children can play in the swing while you enjoy a delicious horchata with any of the different starters they offer. The mole from Tlayacapan is really nice and something to taste and enjoy. Or eat any of their quesadilla. It is a very magical place where you can also appreciate the pottery of the local community. This is a place where you wish it were your everyday backyard.

We weren't sure about his place at first. It doesn't seem like much from the outside. But once you walk through the gate, you are surprised by this beautiful garden. Tables are placed all around it shaded by lemon trees, avocado trees or orange trees. So the smell of the place is naturally great. Servivce is very nice and the food was great. We had breakfast there but lunch seems to be just as good. It's one of the few places that take credit cards. I recomend it.

Great discovery in the centre of Tlayacapan right next to the cerería. Diverse menu that stretches from the Mexican classics through to Spanish tapas and pizzas/pasta - truly something for everyone's taste. We tried the cecina, arrachera and the sopa de tortilla and all were delicious - it's obvious that the owners take care over the quality of the food and it's presentation. Prices were very reasonable for the quality of the dishes. They also boast more than 60 Mexican craft beers, and a wide selection of tequilas and mezcales, with some of the latter available "a granel", that's to say, from small barrels. They have Tobalá, Espadin, Madre Cuixe, all excellent.
We ate in the afternoon, but chatting to the owner he told me they have regular events in the evenings, from live music to theme nights, and information on these can be found updated on their Facebook page. There is a Terrace outside for al fresco dining (bring a thick sweater as the temperature plummets at night) and tables inside for a more intimate ambience.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here and will definitely be returning, the combination of tasty well-prepared food, decent beer and mezcal would be a winning combination in any Mexican town or city, but to stumble across this place in the centre of Tlayacapan was our best surprise of the Christmas holidays. We haven't been very often to this town, but we'll surely be returning more frequently from now on.

Food. For the breakfast there's a buffet, it is limited in options and plates quality is poor, from few flavor, some salty and they run out of some products even more people is just coming in to have breakfast and they do not replenish. Here is where I have tried the word pan dulce, hard without flavor.
Service is average without attention in details.
View from terraza is the best.
At the end they offer a rode in calandria, nice detail. They can be better for the price.

The reviews all loved the place so off we went to try. The food was some of the best I have had in Mexico in my 8 years living here. Everything was so well prepared from the salad to the rib eye steak which came with creamed spinach or roasted red peppers (since we shared everything, we had both), a half of a twice baked potato. There are traditional Mexican dishes on the menu also. Tomorrow I plan to have the tinga tosadas. I would always go out of my way to eat here. Hardly anyone was in town on Friday night, but I hear that the town is busier on Sat and Sun.
