Things to do in Zakynthos, Ionian Islands: The Best Wineries & Vineyards

May 8, 2022 Lean Nau

The Ionian Islands are splendid, cinematic paradise. The waters are bluest blue, the sands are achingly silky and smooth. Everything looks heavily Photoshopped. But that's just Mother Nature, in all her unspoiled glory. Zakynthos is the largest of the Ionian Islands, and it's as fruitful as it is beautiful, boasting a bounty of crops like olives and grapes. Music is a huge part of the local culture—you can catch a concert or festival almost any night of the week, and you'll be captivated by the sights and sounds of Zakynthos performers.

Ampelostrates Horse Vineyard

“Ampelostrates” (vineyard routes) is a rustic place in mountain side of Zakynthos/Koiliomeno.Is our proposal in the world of agritourism in Greece. We took every knowledge about the land the food the wine and art we had, and we create this place with patience without the support of any subsidised program. We want to create an alternative relationship between people and environment. With startup our small restaurant, we provide a group of activities about art, sports, entertainment and agro-life.

My husband, 2 year old and I drove from Vasilikos to go here as we found it on TripAdvisor and thought we'd take the chance and we are so glad we did. You drive through a small vineyard and pull up to a stunning and rustic farmhouse with a seating area set amongst trees. There are chickens, dogs and cats running around which my toddler LOVED. The owner brought over both a karafe of homemade red and white wine, bread, olives and homemade cheese to match the wine without us even asking and everything was stunning. The food is another level and one of the best meals I've had in Greece and I have had A LOT! the atmosphere is chilled, rustic, friendly and homely and something I would highly recommend doing if you're anywhere in Zakynthos.

Goumas Estate - Art & Wine Winery

A venue of enhanced creativity, Goumas Estate - Art & Wine is located at Trilagkada, near the mountainous settlement of Maries, northwestern Zakynthos. Two different but connected worlds of creation cohabit its spaces; an icon painting workshop and a boutique winery. Both live on the hard work, passion and life of Giatras-Goumas family, confined in a traditional, refurbished home made of stone.

As soon as you step into the Goumas estate, you are transferred to another dimension. Serenity, taste and good honest work ooze out of every stone. It’s you, the mountains, the vineyard, the stone rooms, and the gods of nature. Giannis is a saint-painter having taken many projects of orthodox church renovation and decoration. He creates his wines like he creates his art: with diligence, honour and sophistication. Despina is also a creature of art, a talented and resourceful multitasker, gliding like a fairy from the vineyard to help with daily chores, to the kitchen to produce unique handmade jams and cookies and caramelised fruit symphonies, to the dance-school to keep following her passion and keeping her body and spirit balanced and tuned. Have a sit with these two very interesting artists. Taste the unique wines - make sure you don’t miss the smoked wine! Sample the homemade delicacies! And indulge into the most Greek experience you can have: great food, great wine, and deep conversation on a little slice of heaven!
