From Tunis, the road runs alongside a partially restored Roman aqueduct, reminding that Tunis, since ancient times, has been drinking spring water from the mountain of Zaghouan. Along the way, fans of archeology will appreciate the site of Oudna, a Punic city that has become Roman. The so-called “Laberii” villa with its thirty rooms on 2,300 m² deserves a special visit for its mosaics, an archaeological site well preserved includes an astonishing amphitheater that could once accommodate 20,000 spectators. Then we will visit the Andalusian medina of Zaghouan, to finish with Thuburbo Majus, an ancient city that experienced a decline in the middle of the third century before a brilliant renaissance in the fourth century, leading it to proclaim itself Respublica Felix Thuburbo Majus. The vandal invasion, in the middle of the fifth century, put an end to the prosperity of the city and brought it back to the rank of a town which soon after the Arab conquest was deserted.

3. Full-Day Tour to Zaghouan from Tunis

El Hana International, 49 Avenue Habib Bourguiba, Tunis 1015, Tunisia Batouta Voyages

Depart from Tunis and visit the aqueduct (13 mi/22 km from Tunis). Sitting at a height of 984 ft/300 m on Jebel Zaghouan, Proceed to Zaghouan, the site where Hamilcar (father of Hannibal) defeated the mercenaries rebelling against Carthage after the first Punic war. Carthage was defeated by the Romans in 241 B.C. and was forced to pay a heavy war tribute to Rome. Visit the Temple des Eaux. This once grand semi-round temple is built close to the city, over the springs of Zaghouan. It might have been constructed around the time when the Emperor Hadrian ordered the building of the aqueducts to Carthage. Its main room above the spring was, without doubt, dedicated to one of the many gods of water. After Lunch, departure for a stroll through Zaghouan’s charming old quarter. The narrow streets and the architecture testify to the Andalucian influence on the city.

This place is so serene, so beautiful, so worth a visit. I fell in love with this place the minute we arrived and I had the bombolini. You must try the donuts. The art pieces are really nice here, also. The flowers have a deep color hue. The white walls all over. It is just a must see location. If you have time spend a full day here. There is plenty to do and is not that far from Tunis.
