Things to do in Yucatan Peninsula, Yucatan Peninsula: The Best Distilleries

April 24, 2022 Kandra Bartel

Hidden gems of Yucatan, such as Tulum, Akumal, Chetumal, Chichen Itza and Merida, offer an authentic taste of Mexico. Akumal and more Caribbean-style Chetumal, near the Belize border, deliver delectable white-sand beaches and great snorkelling. Merida, Chichen Itza and Tulum, with their ancient ruins, offer a passage into the Yucatanâs native history. Nature lovers can jungle trek and swim in subterranean sinkholes filled with crystal-clear water. Bike around the ruins and hop between towns in colectivo vans.

Posheria Merida

Visit La Posheria, house of a mayan traditional beverage: Pox Bankilal (pronounced "posh"). This is a drink made out of corn and we offer five flavours: White traditional, black traditional, coffee, coconut, vanilla and cacao. In La Posheria you can also find our coffee, brought directly from the highlands of Chiapas. Come to La Posheria and have a taste of this spiritual journey now in Merida.

The building housing Posheria, located on Paseo de Montejo, is beautiful. It is worth the trip to see the story of growing and harvesting the corn depicted on the walls in the form of a mural. And, if you are lucky enough to meet Julio and have him personally tell you the story behind pox (pronounced posh with a soft, long O) and the Posheria that's an added bonus. He gave us samples of several different flavors of the corn based, alcoholic pox and we had a hard time selecting just one. So we bought two! The Posheria and the concept behind the pox is so unique and excitingly trendy. Do try it!

Located at the Southern most tip of Mexico’s COSTA MAYA on the Caribbean shores. Established in 2013, we are proud to announce that we were the first artisanal brewery and distillery in the state of Quintana Roo. After a well needed vacation in Seattle, hopping from brew pub to brew pub…pairing all kinds of beers and oysters…we were addicted.

Great quick stop while on a tour or in a rental car. Right off the Cancun-Merida Toll road and very close to nearby Valladolid. The tour is interesting. The guides gave us extra tastings. Bought a small nip of tequila. The tequila is both smoky and sweet. Very different tequila than the traditional, well-known brands. Huge gift shop where we didn't buy anything.

Margaritas and sipping tequila! We began with a tasty margarita and progressed to the tasting room where the good stuff-tequila was brought out. We learned that the rot-gut tequila, the type we chug a lugged in college is used in margaritas. The good tequila is to be savored, tasted and enjoyed. Just like a fine brandy. We were served a progression of good to better tequilas and were told to first experience the aroma on our nose, swirl and swish and then taste. Fun experience.

We toured this facility as part of a shore excursion from our Carnival cruise, and we thought it was great. We learned about the making of tequila, and were supplied with generous tastes of 7 different kinds of tequila that they make. I couldn't believe how smooth and tasty they all were. I didn't know tequila could taste like that. We were not pressured to buy at all, but we all did. The prices are not cheap, but worth it for the quality you receive. We each bought several different kinds and brought them home, and when we unwrapped them they were all exactly what we paid for and fantastic. I would recommend this tour to just about anyone.
