Laurance Rockefeller Preserve

Reviewed By cscushman - Houston, United States

This is a great hike for the whole family. You can do a short hike to Phelps Lake or a much longer hike around the whole lake. Put lunch in your backpack and head off through a beautiful wooded trail along parts of a trickling stream. Make sure you take bear spray with you. I have seen bears on more than one occasion. After your hike, stop in at their visitor’s center to learn more about the Rockefeller family and their generous donation of land for our Park’s system. Make sure to save time to watch the all seasons slide show showing the park and it’s animals in all four seasons. Then step back into the zen like room where you can sit and listen to all the sounds of the many wonders of GTNP. They only allow so many cars to park in their lot. Get their early or take a book and wait in line, in your car, for the next parking place.

We had the most incredible trip with the Teton Raptor Center and JH Vintage Adventures! Len led my two kids (3 and 4 years old) and I down the Snake River - he was a wealth of knowledge and a joy to be around. He also spotted 8 different bald eagles which was a highlight of our time in JH for my son. The Teton Raptor Center team brought a few of their raptors and deepened our education. My kids were enthralled (as was I). I felt that both teams took every precaution during Covid to keep us safe. Highly recommend this to anyone who has the opportunity to participate.

I've lived in the West most of my life, but had never been to northwest Wyoming. The scenery on the Chief Joseph highway is the most spectacular of our loop through Yellowstone and Cody.

Deerwood Ranch Wild Horse EcoSanctuary

The ranch was easy to find and our guide/host Jana was a jem. My friend who is a professional horse photographer and I spent the afternoon/early evening capturing the horses in all their splendor. The variety of horse types/coats made for interesting compositions. Jana was so accomdating and helpful spotting groups or individual horses, as well as moving us around the ranch to take advantage of the light as it changed thru the time we were there. The highlight of the visit was seeing the herd spontaneously run from one portion of the ranch to the other past us. Jana mentioned that it was rare to experience this occurrence and we cherished the experience. The visit was truly the highlight of our trip out west to photograph wild horses.

American Fossil

American fossil is giving you the opportunity of a lifetime. We have the only quarry in the world where you have the opportunity to keep every fossil you find. We have recently acquired the South Dempsey Quarry, in the Green River Formation and want to make it the most exciting destination in the world for families and everyone who loves fossils or the outdoors. Our quarry is open May 15-September 30th.

We came from Oregon to do this, we have always wanted to and it did not disappoint! We were a little disappointed by how roped off we were to actual fossil digging, it seemed to take the ambiance away and seemed a little too structured. BUT.... After being there a little while you understand why it has to be done this way. Piles 6 feet apart roping you into a section that you can only pick from. You obviously cannot roam free around the quarry like you see in your vision. But that is dangerous! And you could never did out chunks from that wall yourself. We had a 12 yr old and 11 yr old and they had great time, although the heat was a bit much for 4 hrs. Tips: Bring more water than you think you need! Bring camp chair without arms Sunscreen and hat! Plan to be there at hour or more AFTER your time is up packing your Fossils We didn't know the larger fossils had to ride vertical, they can't lay flat or risk breaking. Buy a large roll of bubble wrap from Home depot, cheap and works great/tape gun Staff was very helpful and we found lots of cool fish! 2nd day our daughter found a stingray!!! We will be back someday but will bring our trailer for a week of fossil digging! Thanks to the staff for helping, was a experience us and the kids won't forget!

This is an excellent spot to stop. Once you climb the stone viewing platform, you can view the Libby Flats and on a clear day you can see south to the the Colorado Rockies, west to Montana and Sugar Peak. If you step up on the center, the top tells you what you can see in each direction. A must do when driving along the Snowy Byway. Bathrooms available at this stop too.

National Elk Refuge

A wildlife refuge located north of Jackson, WY that provides winter habitat for Jackson's elk herd. Seasonal hours of operation are listed on the web site for the Visitor Center, Historic Miller Ranch, and Winter Sleigh Ride tours.

Reviewed By cmhprh - Kenosha, United States

This is a fun way to see elk -- lots and lots of elk -- up close and personal, in a very safe manner. Tickets are $25 a person, but the sleigh only holds 12 or so passengers, so it's a small group. Bundle up, because this is, after all, outside, in the winter, in Jackson Hole, where it can be snowing, blowing, and downright cold! Or, as on our day, a gloriously sunny day, as luck would have it. You must get a reservation for this trip, which lasts about an hour or so. And you show up at the Jackson Visitor Center to pay and get your ticket. A small shuttle bus takes you a couple miles up the road to the Elk Refuge, where you disembark, meet your sleigh driver, and get going rather quickly. They do hand out a liberal amount of blankets, to help keep you warm, but do dress accordingly -- in layers, and wisely. Our driver was very interesting, conveying lots of facts about the horses (we had Percheron draft horses; the other horses they use are Belgian draft horses), about the elk refuge, about the elk, about feeding in the winter, and on and on. He stresses safety, so, while the sleigh is moving, keep your seats, please. He does stop frequently, both so he can continue his stories, and so you can take pictures. The scenery is beautiful, the elk are magnificent creatures, the sleigh ride is fun, and it gives you a chance to cuddle up to your sweetie. What more could you want?
