Things to do in Virginia, United States: The Best Visitor Centers

October 9, 2021 Hector Krause

Virginia can make American history come alive. Visit Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, tour Civil War battlefields, explore the living history museum at Williamsburg… the possibilities are endless (if the kids object, break up the historical sightseeing with a visit to Busch Gardens). Arlington, site of Arlington National Cemetery, is just across the Potomac River from all the major sites in D.C. In addition to beaches and historical attractions, Virginia has plenty to offer outdoor enthusiasts. Active families will love the Blue Ridge Highlands, where hiking, canoeing and tubing are just a few of the activities offered. Couples might enjoy a romantic mountain cabin in Virginia after a day of hiking in Shenandoah National Park.

I am so happy I stopped at the Newport News Visitors Center after hiking at Newport News Park (they are at the same location). The ladies were super friendly and after giving me a map guided me to their tourism pamphlet which had coupons in it for most of the places I was going. This rocked and saved me a few bucks. They also had a ton of brochures for not only the area but all over VA. SCORE!!

The Chamber of Commerce was very helpful in planning my trip to Chincoteague. They explained the operations of both the Virginia and Maryland sides of Asseoteague Island and recommended hotels that fit my particular needs (traveling off season with a pet). If you have questions planning your trip, call the Chamber of Commerce first.

Humpback Rocks Visitor Center and Mountain Farm

Pick up general travel guides and maps at the information center or take the self-guided ¾-mile hiking trail to a 19th-century-reconstructed farmstead.

Take this one slow. Says the hike is less than a mile but it seems like 4 miles. It’s a steep incline from the parking lot until about the last 1000 ft. I saw everyone from young kids 3-4 years old to people in their 70’s on this trail but I didn’t seen anyone power up this trail. You have to take it slow and steady. Bring a snack and water. Wide trail the bottom half that really narrows and becomes rocky and steep the second half. Poison Oak and Poison Ivy really close and at the edge of the trail in some places. Saw a rattlesnake and a large deer. View from the top is worth the strenuous hike.

My husband and I were in town for vacation and visited the Welcome Center on 6/25/19 in search of hiking information. Nellie welcomed us and went well out of her way to find the perfect hike for us. She was caring and kind and listened to our needs. Her smile and effort was just what we needed. We went hiking on the trail she recommended and were so happy with the hike that we came back the following day to thank her in person. Thank you Nellie and Front Royal Visitor Center!
