Wandered into the museum before a day on the beach and it did not disappoint. The exhibits were easy to understand yet very informative. Highly recommend if you’re interested in shipwrecks, rescue efforts, or even the evolving culture of Virginia Beach. Admission was donation based and the museum allowed our leashed dog in. Definitely check it out!

Lynnhaven House

The Lynnhaven House is a fine example of early Virginia vernacular architecture. It reflects the social and economic status of Francis Thelaball, a middling plantation owner who built it for his family. Architectural and design details including brick jack arches, a closed-spindle staircase with teardrop pendant, and ship's lap floor construction reveal a builder concerned with quality as well as artistry. Today the Lynnhaven House is furnished as a historic house museum to interpret the period Francis Thelaball and his family lived there, from 1725 to 1727. Guided tours discuss the roles of the household members--Francis, his wife Abigail, their five sons, an apprentice, and several enslaved people--as well as the Tidewater world of the early 18th century.

We took our young kids here with another family with young kids, and we all had a great time. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. The aquarium has a variety of exhibits and creatures: sea turtles, ducks, sharks, Komodo dragons, etc. It’s also got a cool boardwalk area outside along the water where you can spot a variety of critters in the wild. It’s a great place to take the family for a few hours.

Ferry Plantation House

Ferry Plantation House is a 1830 brick structure (once covered with oyster shell stucco) with a ten-room central passage plan. It's an example of a Federal farm house facing the Western Branch of the Lynnhaven River. The volunteers of Ferry Plantation tell the recorded past of the families who have lived on the property since the mid-1650s as-well-as the history of Virginia Beach.

We went on a Saturday, got there about 11AM, right as a tour was starting. It was a $10 donation to take the tour. We learned a lot of fascinating information about the area, the pungo witch, and the life and history of the plantation itself. The tour was an amazing 3 hours long, but not because it needed to be, but because the volunteer tour guide was passionate about history and the area. Because it was so long, people basically came in at different sections of the tour. The tour guides name was Cody, and he was very good. One note is the tour was my wife's idea, and I don't usually enjoy them, but Cody made it worth going.
