Things to do in Vienna, Vienna Region: The Best Cultural Events

March 24, 2022 Carley Gatson

In Vienna, the coffee house isn’t just a hangout: it’s an institution. Lingering over a newspaper with a pastry and a strong espresso drink is, according to UNESCO, officially a Viennese cultural pastime. Walk off your slice of Sachertorte with a self-guided tour of the city’s stunning traditional, Secessionist, and modern architecture, such as the Imperial Palace, the State Opera House, the Kirche am Steinhof, or the Kunsthistorisches Museum, an exercise in ornate geometry.

If you visit Vienna for the Christmas markets then this is definitely one to see. It has a different ambience to the other markets which can feel very samey once you have walked down one row. Here you can find a collection of different items and is well worth a visit. It is situated along 3 alleys and so has a feel of a street market as well.

Christmas Market on Rathausplatz

Romantic Vienna lights up in Advent with the scent of glühwein hanging over the Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt set against the lovely backdrop of the Neo-Gothic town hall. Here more than 150 wooden stalls offer yuletide gifts – from handmade wooden toys to lavish tree decorations and Christmas candles – lights are strung across the square and nativity stories are read each evening. Food vendors offer Viennese specialities from smoked sausages to apple strudels and spicy punch, there are carol concerts around the Christmas tree and train rides on the Christkindl Express in the Rathauspark.

The city has 7 or 8 Christmas markets but the one at Rathaus is the biggest. You can find there an ice skating rink, panoramic wheel and many Christmas houses where you can buy souvenirs, delicious sausages, gingerbread and mulled wine (the price is 8 Euro if you want to keep the mug and if you want to return it you receive back 4 Euro).
