Things to do in Vienna, Vienna Region: The Best Cooking Classes

March 16, 2022 Joeann Galban

In Vienna, the coffee house isn’t just a hangout: it’s an institution. Lingering over a newspaper with a pastry and a strong espresso drink is, according to UNESCO, officially a Viennese cultural pastime. Walk off your slice of Sachertorte with a self-guided tour of the city’s stunning traditional, Secessionist, and modern architecture, such as the Imperial Palace, the State Opera House, the Kirche am Steinhof, or the Kunsthistorisches Museum, an exercise in ornate geometry.

Taste & Cook in Vienna with Bianca Is(s)t

Food. Culture. Vienna. Linz. Hello and welcome! My name is Bianca and together with my team, we have hosted international teams and travelers in our kitchen or on a Food Safari since 2015. I am an Austrian Chef, Food Lover, Economist and Writer based in Vienna & Linz. Besides my love and dedication for food I enjoy travelling which, has afforded me the opportunity to gain deep knowledge of the "International Cuisine". Food is culture! And I would even go further and say: Food means Identification & Home! Thus, we don't provide simple cooking classes, but a wide repertoire of food stories and delicious recipes. We offer: Food Safaris, open or private cooking classes for individual travelers and groups!

One of my favorite ways to get to know a place is through its food. Katharina was generous with her knowledge of Vienna food culture and her enthusiasm for her country and her craft made for an authentic Austrian cooking experience. A delicious traditional meal prepared and enjoyed with a great group of people, from near and far. Delightful afternoon.

Our cooking evening at Andante was a real highlight of our recent European visit. We enjoyed an evening class just before Christmas and it was a fantastic experience led by wonderful host/chef Nabiel. We learnt to cook soup with semolina dumplings, weiner schnitzel and apple strudel and Babiel was great at involving everyone, encouraging us all to take part from stretching strudel pastry to crumbing schnitzels. Finally, we ate our delicious meal! Thoroughly recommended.

What a lovely outing! Andrea collected us at our hotel in her car. She shared her knowledge of the city and took us to the food market built on the river. It was very festive and we learnt about different cheeses and meats, and traditional Viennese vinegar. Andrea took us into her cozy home and taught us to prepare an apple strudel and sweet chestnut soup, whilst we sipped on some bubbles. Andrea emailed me the recipes of the food we made. She was at all times very professional and friendly. Her knowledge of Europe and culture in general was such a treat. I would definitely return!!

The Strudelshow

Down an impressive staircase, there is a historic room with arched ceilings where delicacies have been baked for centuries. Each hour an event takes place here which is guaranteed to make mouths water: The Strudelshow! Here you can experience how a traditional Viennese apple strudel is prepared. From the slicing of fresh apples to the rolling out of dough so thin one can read a newspaper through it. This unique process has to be seen! It is also unique in that at the end of this process visitors can taste a freshly-baked apple strudel.

This was a very entertaining activity for the whole family and glad we went. It was a nice break from the heavy itinerary of touring palaces and art museums. No reservations are needed, but here are some tips. -Shows are 11am to 4pm on the hour (including a show at 4pm) -Start queuing 15 min before the show (enter through the Cafe entrance on your right and there is a stairwell down to the demonstration area) -This is not a hands-on show -There are about 20 tables that seat 4 guests. We were 3rd or 4th in the wait line and got a table in the second row. 3 of the tables in the first row were reserved for people who booked the event through Booking.com or Viator for a premium price. -You can order a small portion of strudel to taste or a full sized portion. Menu prices vary. -I asked a question over email the day of the show and they promptly replied in email which was really helpful since I didn't have phone service. The strudel was very good, in fact, the best strudel I had there during our trip (which included Cafe Central).
