Melbourne Central

Melbourne Central is a diverse shopping and dining destination that invites you to keep exploring. Bringing together more than 300 retailers over five levels, Melbourne Central is home to an absorbing range of Australian and international fashion brands from Gorman, Alannah Hill, Crumpler to Vans and Nique. Take a sugar break at Cupcake Central, a beauty break at Mecca Maxima or an indulgent time-out at Self Centred Medi Spa. The buzz continues after dark, whether you are lurking in Knox Lane with its graffiti by Melbourne's infamous DABS and MYLA, or basking beneath a screen in the Hoyts Lux Cinema. Spanning two city blocks, the centre boasts several unique architectural features including the giant Marionette Watch hanging in Shot Tower Square, famous for its hourly rendition of the Australian anthem 'Waltzing Matilda'. The square is named after the historic Coops Shot Tower a bullet-making facility built in 1889. Today, the brick shot tower stands proudly in its original place, protected by a modern twist: the magnificent Glass Cone, designed in the '80s by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. While it floods the centre with natural light, the Glass Cone's design also makes it one of Melbourne's most recognisable landmarks. Located atop the City Loop Melbourne Central train station and can be found on the iconic free city circle tram route. Melbourne Central boasts 822 car parks making it the perfect base for Melbourne city excursions. The five-star-rated parents' retreat offers a sanctuary for families, while The Little Library free book exchange provide spaces for pause and escape from the city's frenetic buzz. Whatever brings you to Melbourne, be it shopping, exploring, lunch, brunch or simply an unexpected adventure, it is all waiting between Lonsdale and La Trobe. Or to go behind the scenes book a place on Melbourne Central's Unlocked Tour which leads visitors around hidden nooks, rarely-seen vantage points and secret rooftops. Bernadette Alibrando can also tell you the tales of Melbourne Central's huge range of artworks in the Walk to Art Tours. For bookings please visit the Melbourne Central website.

Royal Arcade

The Royal Arcade is a charming heritage shopping arcade in the heart of Melbourne's CBD. The Royal Arcade was proudly the first arcade in Melbourne and is the longest-standing arcade in Australia. Originally designed by Charles Webb and constructed in 1869, the arcade has high glass roof and windowed stores. At the south end, the arcade features effigies of mythical figures Gog and Magog and a clock that chimes each hour. The arcade connects Little Collins Street to the Bourke Street Mall, with a perpendicular passage running to Elizabeth Street in the west. The Royal Arcade is much loved by locals and tourists and is an icon of the city. It is recognised on the Victorian Heritage Register and Melbourne's Golden Mile heritage walk runs through the arcade. The Royal Arcade is famous for its boutique fashion stores as well as specialty stores such as Spellbox where you can have your fortune read, Little royal Macarons and Babushka Russian dolls. The Royal Arcade houses an eclectic mix of unique stores with something to suite all tastes.

Emporium Melbourne

Emporium Melbourne hosts 225 premium stores in the heart of the CBD. The Centre features a mix of Australian and international designers, innovative concept and flagship stores and world class architecture. The Centre connects to Melbourne Central, the Myer Melbourne department store and to David Jones via pedestrian bridges and tunnels. It also indelibly connects with Melbourne's history and its heart.

Emporium Melbourne is truly shopping in style. We have only been there twice but it was quite impressive. There are numerous shops and on the day we visited it seemed to be a very busy time indeed. The place is large and rather luxurious. It gives the feeling of openness as well as vastness. The architecture is quite stunning and probably contributes to the Centre's popularity. You can probably buy almost anything you would wish there but some of the prices seemed a bit too high. Also the food court is quite spacious and although normally we avoid such areas, this place seems to cater for many tastes and it is one where we would actually go to have something to eat and be really satisfied.

Puckle Street Precinct

Reviewed By AnnMarieGrace - Adelaide, Australia

Puckle Street is a high energy shopping street with lots of independent speciality shops, some chain stores, cafes, restaurants and services (such as the Australia Post and Woolworths). It is lovely coming to the street on a warm day and exploring all the stores, you will find something different. Also there is access to Moonee Ponds Central which has plenty more shops (such as K-Mart) and is a short walk to Queens Park if you want to sit and relax in a picturesque park. It is a shopping centre worth coming to and spending the day. There is lots of onsite parking (either at Moonee Ponds Central or at the back of Puckle Street) in lots of different sections (do your research where to come before you come). Another recommendation would be to come by train and get off at Moonee Ponds station or travel by the 59 tram.

Moonee Ponds Central (MPC) is adding a new dining area, it seems likely to draw more foot-traffic to the area. Coles, K-Mart and Aldi anchor MPC. The expanded area has been good for the Coffee Club, their new location is a boon for coffee lovers. Some of the smaller retailers, such as Ray's Nuts, have lost some customers and gained some now that people are movong in to occupy the new apartment blocks in the area. The proximity to Puckle Street, one of Melbourne's most prosperous shopping strips, has givnen MPC a boost.

It had everything you can ask for - a huge variety of shops, a lot of good restaurants, a nice good court area, 2 large groceries, cinemas including Gold Class where we watched Bohemian Rhapsody, and a big parking area. I spent a fortune in the mall but it was well worth it.
