Carnival of Venice

The entire city of Venice transforms into an even more magical place during the mid-winter carnival celebrations. Highlights include Volo dell’Angelo ('flight of the angel'), when an angel flies on a zip-wire over St. Mark's Square and costumed parades. To really join in the fun, don your own mask and sweeping cape, called a 'tabarro.'

Our first visit here was amazing! We could follow the programme on the official website, everything was well organised. The people in costumes were very friendly and patient despite of the uncountable photos were taken. It was unusual to meet these people in costumes all day long and it had strange mood. We have to go back soon to ride in a gondola!

Historic Regatta

Venice was once one of Italy’s major maritime republics. This power and splendor are celebrated with decorated 16th century boats in the 'Voga alla Veneta' each September. Gondoliers in historical costumes recreate carrying the Doge and his wife up the Grand Canal. There are four races throughout the day with the finish line located in front of the Ca' Foscari palace.

Venice Biennale Festival

Lose yourself in art, as the city of Venice hosts a six-month-long festival of the visual arts (from the end of May until mid-November every two years). The two main venues are the Giardini and the Arsenale at the far end of the island. Though, some of the real treasures can be found in what are known as 'collateral' events, held in palazzos and gardens that are usually closed to the public.
