Looking for a Caribbean cultural melting pot renowned for its Carnival and pulsating to the beat of steel drums, soca music, and calypso? Trinidad is also lined with relaxing beaches and rainforest waterfalls. Nature watching is colorfully kaleidoscopic, with over 450 bird, 600 butterfly, and 700 orchid species. Eat curries and explore India’s influence at Maha Sabha Indian Caribbean Museum and the Waterloo Temple over the sea. Visit Port of Spain, and stroll and jog in Queen’s Park Savannah, near the Botanical Gardens, Emperor Valley Zoo, and Magnificent Seven buildings. The Savannah attracts truckloads of fresh coconuts, and doubles men sell coveted aloo pies. Walk around Independence Square and the Brian Lara Promenade. The Central Bank Money Museum in downtown’s financial district displays doubloons, gold bars, and Slave Savings Bank memorabilia. View Columbus Square’s 1836 Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Parliament meets in Woodford Square’s Red House. King’s Wharf is where cruise ships and Tobago ferries dock. The Venezuela ferry docks at Williams Bay. Near the Chaguaramas Military History & Aerospace Museum is a marina with yachts, sailboats, dry docks, and boat hires. The South Quay’s Fort San Andreas, built by Spain in the 1700s, has a small Port of Spain history museum branch of the National Museum and Art Gallery of Trinidad and Tobago.

I should start by saying, food tours are my thing so me saying this was the best food tour EVER is well-considered. I was in Trinidad alone for two nights and all I knew was that I wanted to eat doubles and have a roti. This was my first time to Trinidad & Tobago but I’m lucky enough to have had some great Trini’ food in London. Or so I thought! Turns out nothing tastes better than a Trini’ food tour, in Trinidad with a Trinidadian who has the tea on the very best places to eat. Firstly, Anthony is a gem. You’re in safe hands whether a solo traveller or in a group. His communication and helpfulness from immediate booking of the tour was great. I had the privilege of being the only person on my nighttime food tour - I think I might have been the last or one of the last tours before the pandemic hit full on in March 2020. In fact, the tour was one of the last things I did that was in the old normal! If there is ever a place where a carnivore could happily become vegan / vegetarian, it’s Trinidad. I had doubles, beef roti, corn soup, a pork cutter, soursop icecream and everything was incredible. Not to mention the great history of Trinidad, it’s people and its food, that Anthony will keep you entertained with. If you only go one one tour in Trindad, make it one with Trinidad Food Tours.

Experience with a difference, a natural mud bath at L’eau Michel Mud Volcano in south Trinidad. Unlike other mud volcanoes in Trinidad, the mud at L’eau Michel is semi solid and liquid enough for visitors to bathe in.  The mud flows out through active vents. The mud here is not hot despite what the term ‘volcano’ might suggest, the mud is cool and smooth and so dense it keeps you a float. This is usually followed by a short 30-minute hike to the southern coast to L’eau Michel Beach. The tour concludes with a stop at the Roti Shop and Debe to experience their Cuisine. Our tour guide Jeffery was excellent! He was very knowledgeable and personable and we enjoyed our time with him. We were looking for a overview of Port of Spain, and Trinidad and Tobago and he delivered just that. He also knew all the good places for tasty local food.
