It has an area of 16,171 square kilometres (6,244 sq mi) and 2.29 million inhabitants, making it the sixth smallest by area and the fifth smallest by population of Germany's sixteen states. Most of Thuringia is within the watershed of the Saale, a left tributary of the Elbe. The capital is Erfurt.

We booked, in advance by email, a private 3-hour guided tour in English of Medieval Erfurt and the Martin Luther sites through the Erfurt Tourist Office. The was a fabulous tour which showed us all the sites it would have taken us many more hours to see on our own. This was a private tour for 2 people, but we found the price to be quite reasonable. I believe the tourist office also offers group tours on certain days at set times in English. The tourist office even made some restaurant recommendations based on our interests and booked some dinner reservations for us. They were very helpful and professional.The tourist office should be visited even if you do not want a guided tour. They have maps and a nice gift shop. They are located a few steps from the Krämerbrücke.
