Welt der Gifte

WELT DER GIFTE IS AUSTRIA’S smallest and most toxic zoo. Located in Salzburg, the facility is home to a surprising number of reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods—but only of the venomous and poisonous varieties. Originally founded in Germany in 2017, the WdG aims to spread knowledge about poisons and their role in various aspects of life. After a temporary closure, it opened in Salzburg in 2020. While the focus is on venomous animals, it also includes organic as well as inorganic toxins such as poisonous plants and seeds, mushrooms, microorganisms, poisonous elements, and their various compounds. The facility can only be visited by booking a guided tour. Additionally, training courses, workshops and photo sessions are offered on individual demand.

Nice setting, with good views across to the Untersberg. Decent enclousres where the animals have better than usual space to roam. Great range of wildlife, split nicely by continent, including jaguars, snow leopards, lions, cheetahs, arctic wolves and brown bears. Well setup for children with plenty of educational gizmos. Easy to reach by bus (route 25) from Salzburg centre. Free access with a Salzburg card (which of course also includes the bus fares). Easy to walk between here and neighbouring Hellbrunn. And also easy to combine with a trip to the Untersberg (the cable car for which is also included on the Salzburg card).

Last summer I took my four grandkids for a truly wonderful day out to see these magnificent birds fly so close over our heads. It was brilliant, the staff were good and very helpful and this year I am taking a group from a club for the experience too! Well worth it.

Wildpark Aurach

We spent the afternoon here on Christmas Eve and it was amazing. There had been snow the night before, so there was fresh powder on the ground and it also started snowing whilst we were there. It was delightful to walk around this park in amongst the animals and see them up close. You would never get this opportunity in the wild. We then ventured into the restaurant for a warm drink and to shelter from the snow. It was Christmas Eve and there were large families gathering to celebrate Christmas. Us two girls from Australia felt like we had stumbled into an Austrian families Christmas and it was so special. We drank our hot chocolate as we watched the snow fall outside. It is a Christmas Eve we will always remember. On a side note, the park only accepts cash, so make sure you have enough before you head up as there are no ATMs.
