The coolest thing I have ever done. What an amazing company to trek with. Our guides were perfect - Joseph and Goodluck were saints. The whole set up was immensely professional and an extremely reasonable rate for renting first class equipment which kept me toasty. Thanks to the whole team and also for the popcorn half way up the worlds largest free standing mountain. Would definitely recommend.

7. 3 Days 2 Nights Irente View,Magamba Forest & Mtae View Point-Usambara Mountains

Livan Holidays Tours & Safaris - Tanzania

In the latter half of the 19th century it is reported that there was a lot of war and terror with neighboring tribes which ended with the German colonization. The Germans discovered the charm of the Usmabara's and they established Lushoto (during those days Wilhelmsthal) and it was a favoured holiday spot for colonial administrators. Today you still find many traces of the German times. Tanganyika became a British mandate territory after World War I. The British administration continued to reserve and exploit forests. After independence in 1961 the Ujamaa politics or so called "African socialism" of president Nyerere brought one of the best organized village communities in Africa which still exists today in the Usmabara's. Besides the historical sites the Usambaras have a lot of interesting places and activities. It is a exquisite place for hiking, bird watching, mountain biking or relaxing.

Formerly a Game Reserve since 1951, Mkomazi was upgraded into a ‘National Park’ status in 2008. It is located 6km from Same town, covering an area of 3,245square km. The name ‘Mkomazi’is a combination of two words from the Pare ethnic language; “Mko and Mazi”. “Mko” means a traditional tiny wooden spoon used by the Pare people for eating and “Mazi” means water. Our experience in Tanga and with the Tanga Cultural Tourism Enterprise (CTE) was incredible. Imani, our tour guide, was so welcoming when we arrived. He gave us a brief history of the area and highlighted the different programs and tours offered in the area. The first day we were taken on a walking tour of the city. Not only is it a beautiful city that lies next to the Indian ocean, everyone is so friendly and the streets aren't crazy busy, giving the town a relaxed feel. We tried out some coconut wine at the local bar and then ended the tour at Imani's house, where we were lucky enough to share a meal with him and his family. The next day, we went on a bike tour to the Amboni Caves and the Sulphur Hot Springs. Because Tanga is relatively flat, the bike ride was super relaxing, allowing us to take in the sights and city. The Amboni Caves are absolutely stunning and the tour throughout the cave was filled with humour and information about the caves. The next part of the bike ride was through scenic fields, ending at the vibrant blueish green sulphur spring. Through all of this, Imani taught us so much about each attraction as well as the surrounding area. We went back to Imani's families house for lunch, where we went through the entire process of making pilau. This was definitely a highlight for me. It's a lot of work but the end result is delicious! After lunch, we headed to the museum, where we learned about Tanga's history and the German occupations of the area. We ended the evening off with a bike ride down by the ocean. Tanga is a place that should absolutely be on anyone's list when coming to Tanzania. Imani and the Tanga CTE were incredible and we can't thank them enough for our incredible experience in Tanga.
