Things to do in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Vincent and the Grenadines: The Best Private Tours

August 2, 2021 Jacquiline Darosa

There are 32 islands and cays that make up St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). Nine are inhabited, including the mainland St. Vincent and the Grenadines islands: Young Island, Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Union Island, Mayreau, Petit St Vincent and Palm Island. The stunning Tobago Cays National Marine Park is also located within SVG. This multi-island Caribbean nation offers a combination of rainforest eco-adventures, scuba diving, classic Caribbean powder-white sand beaches, luxury accommodation and yachting or sailing adventures.

We have visited St Vincent previously and were looking for something different to see on this visit. We were visiting via cruise ship and Samuel was waiting for us just outside the terminal building. His van was comfortable with AC, although in the end opted for opening the windows for a natural breeze. I contacted Samuel directly and he was very prompt and responsive in answering all my queries. The tour was very interesting with Samuel being a great guide and also serves an amazing rum punch! Would highly recommend a tour with Detention tours.

Our guide and driver, a very careful, thoughtful and capable driver, had a spotless, new and well cared for vehicle (with air conditioning) and clearly knew her stuff. Greta Mapp had others booked, and had gone to considerable expense to make a 60 yr old persons birthday, a day to enjoy. She had been patiently waiting - and she is a lovely patient lady- for the couple, who then claimed they hadn't seen her, and didn't think of phoning her until after midday to cancel. Our gain (was their loss, and they will never know what they missed out on) was that we were taken to fantastic fort with views over the bay, then across to roughly the area where Mesopotamia begins then down to the coast through plantations to a couple of pretty coastal sites, including a marina. Greta had purchased cake, champagne, beer and watermelon for those celebrating, so in her generous way shared some of these items. She kept to her schedule and all times gave brief informative updates. Highly recommended, and Greta was an example of how islanders who live from tourism, need to be respected.

Had a great trip with Fred and enjoyed a full day out on the island. After not finding a trip included on our Marella cruise that we fancied, this was the only one booked through an outside tour operator and it all went very smoothly. We got to see Fort Charlotte, pirates of the Caribbean location, Dark view falls and there was time to stop at a beach for half an hour on the way back (but we felt it would have been a bit rushed so went straight back to the ship after the falls). We got lunch and a drink in a local bar included. Fred was very knowledgable and friendly, a very nice man.

Just completed a 5 day RYA day skipper course with Sail Grenadines out of Bequia. The whole experience from initial enquiry to final disembark was exemplary. Very helpful and hugely accommodative (allowing us to stay on board additional evening) when enquiring and then booking. Ease of communication and questions answered quickly in lead up to trip. Boat presented really well - very comfortable and in good condition. Best thing though and what really made the 5 days so enjoyable, was our instructor John. Fabulously relaxed, very calm, totally unflappable - and we gave him good reason to flap on occasion! Told us what he would like us to do and then allowed us to get on with it, making mistakes along the way which with a gentle correction, we are now more likely to remember to do right next time. Took us modestly outside our comfort zone which gave us an additional sense of achievement. Not easy living in a confined space for five days with a complete stranger but John supremely easy-going and so entire time was very enjoyable. As for the actual sailing; good winds, great locations, memorable dinners - particularly the bbq on the beach in Tobago Cays. Altogether, cannot recommend Sail Grenadines strongly enough - thanks everyone involved, particularly of course John. Look forward to booking with their sister company Sail Ionian.

We spent the day with Samuel and had the best time! He tailored our tour to exactly what we wanted and even tweaked it on the day when we needed to change it. We started with a visit to Forte Charlotte and has an interesting guided tour by one of the guides. We then went onto Dark View Waterfalls which require trekking through a beautiful rain forest (amazing!!) before heading to the Pirates of the Caribbean film set. We were also celebrating a birthday and Samuel arranges a cake! We had fun on the bus and he provided drinks, beer and WiFi - we named it the ‘beer party bus’! St Vincent is beautiful and he knows everything! He is also the best driver on the island :-)! Highly recommend booking him!

The fascinating Dark View Falls tour runs along the West coast of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to the foothills of La Soufriere Volcano. Scenic photo stops along the way will show you our rugged, natural terrain. Passing black sand beaches along the way. A short walk through a bamboo grove, which includes the option of traversing a traditional bamboo pedestrian bridge, will bring you to the impressive falls, which has a pool for bathing and spectacular views. The waterfall cascades about 100 feet. The source of the falls is the Richmond River, which begins in the foothills of the volcano.

We booked our tour to the Montreal Gardens through Trip Advisor. Our tour guide was Fred Stay with Stay’s Taxi & Tours. He has a clean and comfortable vehicle. Very good narrative as we journeyed to the stops along the way. If you are into plants and flowers, Montreal Gardens is well worth the time. Very well maintained paths lead you through the lush plantings and amazing views of the countryside. Highly recommend this half day tour.

I had the full day tour. Since I was the only one that signed up for the tour, I had a “personal” tour. Shakera was great! She explained the sites and their history. Most important to me was that she would stop and let me take photos anywhere I wanted. She never rushed me and always accommodated my wishes. Because it was just the two of us, we did the tour in a car, which I liked better - it made me feel more like a local. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone interested in getting a taste of St. Vincent!
