The history of Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum began in June 1975 when the legendary aircraft carrier USS Yorktown entered Charleston Harbor. A few months later, the USS Yorktown was dedicated as the first ship of the Naval & Maritime Museum on the 200th birthday of the United States Navy. Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum was officially opened to the public on January 3, 1976. Today the museum consists of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-10) with 29 aircraft on display from WWII to the present; the USS Laffey (DD-724), a Sumner-class destroyer; and the USS Clamagore (SS-343), a GUPPY III submarine. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society is headquartered here and their official Medal of Honor Museum is onboard the USS Yorktown. There is also a Cold War Sub Memorial and Vietnam Support Base Camp on the surrounding grounds.

Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum Mount Pleasant, SC. THANK YOU VETERANS OF ALL SERVICES You must see Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum when visiting Charleston, SC. The initial size of the U.S.S Yorktown is overwhelming, then being on the flight deck OMG the beauty of the various models of planes, the harbor, the Arthur Ravenel Jr. bridge and Fort Sumter in the distance is awesome. Below deck you get to see the various support locations, plus the mechanical equipment needed to make this ship function. Please make sure you don’t forget to visit the Vietnam Army Museum.

Was very impressed with this small museum which is ran by vets and offered FREE for all who would like to attend. Lots of interesting artifacts and history. We were greeted upon entering and made to feel very welcome. I highly recommend if you are into history. They even have helicopters and several other pieces of military equipment on display that have been restored. We were lucky and had a vet who joined us towards the end of the tour and gave us a lot of interesting information regarding the place and some of the artifacts. Kudos to everyone who had a hand in getting this together and keeping it open.

We were about to visit with a relative who did his basic training at Parris Island so the timing of our visit was perfect. While he didn't remember walking "through the doors", our conversation about marine history was certainly enhanced by our visit to the museum. It may seem small but we were immersed for several hours -don't miss the video!

The Anderson County Museum was an unexpected "find" on our trip through the area. It is charming, well laid out, and full of beautiful exhibits. We spent about two hours there and could've stayed longer except we needed to be on our way elsewhere. And it's free (donations gratefully accepted.)

Outstanding displays are 1st rate. The artifacts and flags are well conserved. Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. Be sure to visit this museum when visiting Columbia. You will be glad you did.

Thoroughly enjoyed our tour guided by four soldiers who were one week from graduating. We had a group of three families, with 11 school-aged kids. The museum is very detailed, showing the content of the three phases of basic combat training. There is plenty to see and touch. Our guides were so patient with our questions, and they clearly cared very much about giving the kids an accurate understanding of their training experience. What a memorable day for the kids! We were all so impressed with the poise and commitment of these young soldiers. They will surely be valuable additions to our military, and we are grateful for their service. To respond to the other reviewers who stated that the base is not open to the public... You need to call the public affairs office ahead of time to arrange to be escorted. This is proper security procedure, and the staff was extremely helpful. There are certain days (family days, graduation days) when the base is just too busy to accept extra visitors. Calling ahead will overcome all of those concerns.

Stop and Check out the beautiful fighter planes in the park. It’s right beside the Myrtle Beach airport and at the entrance to the Market Common area.

Decent military museum with a friendly staff. Many artifacts from locals. Any military person or veteran will feel at home. Free admission, but several donation jars in the museum to repair the roof. (I went on a rainy day.)
