Dikeos Mountain

Reviewed By L7768EQdavidd - Devon, United Kingdom

Mount Dikeos is the tallest mountain on Kos at 846 metres high it is an imposing feature on the landscape. Our first venture on to the mountain was when we drove from Kardamena to the mountain towns of Pyli and Amaniou then finally arriving in Zipari. It was an experience driving along narrow mountain roads enjoying the rugged contours of the limestone and volcanic landscape of dramatic cliffs and valleys. Totally contrasting with the lush pine forestry and various other trees and bushes. Another day we drove to the picturesque mountain Town Zia Lagoudi, very popular to see the sunset from here. It was another  opportunity for us to enjoy the scenery and explore the delightful town of Zia. We also drove to see the Asklepieion of Kos which is in located in the lower part of the mountain range. Our final encounter with Mount Dikeos was when we returned to visit Paleo Pyli (Castle) and Old Pyli more treasures of the mountain. While driving from Kefalos to Kos Mount Dikeos is a visible companion for a good bit of the journey.

Mount Kynthos

Climb to the top of this scenic mountain and you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the surrounding ruins, countryside and coast.

Take hiking shoes since there is a nice hike uphill were you can get a fabulous view . Mount Kynthos, at 370 feet, is the island's highest point. Up there, are remains of the Temple of Zeus and Athena. To ancient Greeks, this peak seems to look like the spot from which Poseidon had pulled the island up from the deep. Going to Delos is the best cultural excursion from Mykonos. The row of these seven 2600-year-old sphinx like lion statues is one of the main, iconic image of the island. However, only one of the Iions is original. These lions on the site are perfect copies of those originals that are in the museum in Delo for safety and conservation reasons. It gives you a perspective on what it would have looked like coming to the island when the lions were in their original position. Delos is an island that is currently uninhabited and is mainly an archaeological site . You can’t stay there , only the people that are workers stay on the island . You can get to it by Ferry from the island of Mykonos. In June 2019, we left the old port in the afternoon because we missed the 10am boat. There are two options, go on your own, which costs €20 the round trip boat plus €12 for the entrance, that is, a total of €32. The second option, which was the one we chose, was a guided tour that had a value of €50 (it included the round trip boat and the entrance to the place). We recommend the guided tour without a doubt, unless you are not going with someone who knows the subject, you will just see pillars and stones piled on an island with a very nice view. Once we disembarked, we met up with a tour guide who was quite informative, extremely nice, and knowledgeable. We got a sense of how bustling a place Delos was at that time. When the tour ended, we had time to tour the museum and some other parts of the island, then took the ferry back to Mykonos. Don't miss the museum! Don't forget to bring sun block, a hat (there are very few shady places), and water! If you run out of water, inside the museum they give away a bottle of water per person. It takes about 4 hours to tour the island (including the guided tour). Two warnings: bathing and pets are not allowed on the island. Time at Delos was time well-spent.

Profitis Ilias

Reviewed By palmsandtropics - Crete, Greece

Profitis Ilias. Here is the abandoned villa of Mussolini (also known as Villa de Vecchi). It got its name from the Italian commander of the Dodecanese archipelago under Mussolini Count Cesare Mario de Vecchi. This ardent supporter of the Italian National Fascist Party and a confidant of the Duce rebuilt a beautiful historic building to live in it, and in the summer use it as a summer residence of Benito Mussolini. The leader of the Italian fascists intended to spend in Rhodes the last years of his life after retirement, but did not manage to visit the island. Thus, the house went down in history as "Villa Mussolini", although the Duce never saw him. At the moment, the villa is already many years old and it is completely abandoned. After the Italians left the islands for some time, it was the spa house of the Greek royal family, and then - after the liquidation of the monarchy - became the property of the Greek state ???? To get to the villa, you can climb up the small slopes. But there is one “but” - the road to Profitis Illas is quite winding (serpentine), so if you are sensitive to such things, think better. ????

We started our tour at Agia Marina church, and it was an easy hike. The weather was nice, not too hot, so we barely broke a sweat. The views were amazing, definitely worth it.
