My Wife Suveera and I have been holding RYA license Day and Coastal Skippers, the latter is me only, since 1999. Issued by the Legendary instructor Simon James, today the main director of 99% of racing events in Asia. And a dear friend ...!!!!!   We have seldom used our RYA Certificates or log any miles as we both joined several high profile racing Teams in Thailand for 20 Years culminating with 2 positions on TP 52, the ultimate racing machine.   In 2017 our benefactor and dear friend owner, after 40 years of competitive sailing, decided to hang the wheel on the wall and retired.  After one more year on the circuit with a smaller boat, "Loco", a Swan 42, we also decided to retire from active racing. Suveera, 63 years young, best spinnaker packer in Thailand and me, Frankie, 58 years young and 20 years in the pit.   We both decided, time to go cruising ......!!!!   Naturally, we thought about our old mate Phil Harper and his Sailing School Operation and Charter business Gulf Charter operating out of Ocean Marina and Ko Chang.   We quickly discovered that Phil's operation had expanded to Island Spirit, a conglomerate vertical integrated sailing enterprise encompassing Phuket, Ocean Marina, Ko Chang and Samui. Charter, Training, Yacht Brokerage and leasing - quite a jump up from the small and laid back Gulf Charter and the operation Phil was leading 20 years ago. Well done Brother !!!!!   After discussing with Mel, great booking and operation lady in Phuket, we chartered Alexa, an Oceanis 42, and went off sailing for 4 days toward Phi Phi Island.   All good but after 30 years of semi professional racing not cruising we both discovered that cruising was not like cycling, it is a complex 360 degree mix of individual action and coordinated, timely expertise.   Unfortunately, after a few rough nights, we both realized that we were not good enough... Well, not comfortable enough.   Time to go back to school and as we were sailing with Island Charter Phuket, we decided to go for Island Charter Ocean Marina sailing School.   We discussed with Ron, Phil partner in charge of the school and decided to go for an intense 4 days refresh course across the spectrum of theory and practical under the renowned IYT license out of Canada with schools all over the world and Island Charter is an official chapter of IYT.   Craig Verral, their top instructor, was called from Ko Chang base and asked to come and see us at the Ocean Marina to assess us and decide the program. He is a lovely fella, holder of a 200 Tons ship Master license had crossed oceans multiple times, Skipped super yachts in the Med and was extremely patient and well mannered.   Furthermore, he also doubles as Base Manager of Ko Chang. We were humble that Phil and Ron diverted such a sailing celebrity to manage our refresh Skippers courses.   The following 4 days went like lightning in a blur of Meteorology, Navigation, Buoy and lighting signal, anchor procedures, conduct at sea, and a ton of maneuvers at the dock, fuel dock, bow approach, backing to the slip - all of the above with a seasoned but in great condition Oceanis 50, ‘White Squall’, great mother ship not a small yacht by any means .....beamy ... very beamy !!!!  I would not lie, it got my heart rate up and up while maneuvering amidst millions of USD yachts on our port and starboard !!!   All went well under Craig's calm and relaxing demeanor.   The last day knackered but more in tune with our sailing self we spend the morning to train Suveera with all kinds of dinghy maneuver.   As we are planning to sail only the two of us it was imperative that Suveera hone her ability on dinghy driving, beaching boat approach! Just in case that the “skipper” was not able to, due to diarrhea or something!!!!!   At the end of the 4th day we passed our IYT Bareboat Skippers courses with 89% success rate well above the minimum 75% required  -   yuppie !   We will be back to Mel Team in Phuket this week, in a Bavaria 45, ‘Southern Star’, 2 years old Bavaria, the beauty of the sea.   Can hardly wait...   This time - fully confident and ready to enjoy.   Summarizing :   1.      We have known Phil for the past 20 plus years and have only positive memories. 2.      Island Charter Phuket handled all of our teething problems professionally and with courtesy including 3 rounds of drinks upon our returns from the first charter. 3.      Island Charter sailing school customized, organized and managed our recertification, moreover through Craig helped us to build the confidence to go cruising again, only 2 of us on big boats. 4.      We are planning a monthly cruise between Phuket and Ko Chang and the two Bavaria 45 are too good to be true. 5.      We enjoyed our training so much that we are already planning for a Yacht Master course under Craig's leadership with a voyage to the virgin Similan Island, the best diving spot in the world.   If you need a professional but friendly and supportive Team to cater for all your sailing / Charter / Training needs for you, your family or a bunch of mates - Island Spirit is the place to go.   You can mention that you have read Frankie and Ja review and you will be treated with. CAPT Phil Rum and fresh Coconut concoction but only if you pass your course!!!!!   Happy sailing at island Charter.   Skipper Frankie and first Mate Suveera

Sai Kaew Beach

Reviewed By Maplelagjames - Callaway, United States

We found ourselves locked down for six months in Thailand staying in Jomtien and maybe not in love with the beach and water in Jomtien, friends suggested we give the Navy Beach or Sai Kaew a try. With a rented car, it was no problem at all and while a few hoops to go thru, it was fun and interesting and to see such nice well kept grounds. And the beach itself and the water were more than wonderful. It was so good we made the trip perhaps 30 plus times. The small restaurants had great food choices and more than fair prices. The whole fish at 400 baht was so good, I looked forward to that every time we went. I do not understand some of the negative whining comments some of made of this beach. They must feel very entitled. I can see it might be a chore if taking public transport, but it would not be the end of the world. I felt it was all of great value and that is why we kept repeating the experience so many times. When Covid is brought to heel, and tourism returns in a normal manner I cannot wait to return to Sai Kaew. At all times, we were treated with great respect by all the various Thai personnel involved in the various stations you must go thru from fee paying to chair rental. The beach and water were so nice, it gave great comfort to be able to enjoy this. Thanks so much to all involved. Jim at Maplelag in a very cold day here at minus 18 F below zero.

Chee Chan Golf Resort

An International Championship 18 hole, Par 72 course that is a challenging 7,345 yards from the Championship tees. The course has been designed to suit all levels of golfers where layout provides sweeping movement on the fairways and greens and features intricate bunker facing, native landscapes and wetlands. An iconic perspective with sweeping views of Khao Chee Chan, temples and mountains.

my group was bit apprehensive about a new course that had only opened in Dec 2018 but we were surprisingly amazed at the look and feel of the course and the clubhouse, everything was 5 star. Our group ranged from 8 to 22 handicap, playing from the blues course was challenging, long and very interesting, greens bit slow but not easy at all with number of ups & downs. Good addition to pattaya golf circuit, although it looks bit bare at the moment as trees haven't grown, as the course matures over the next few years it will definitely challenge Siam courses. Must play even now!
