Things to do in Santo Domingo, Santo Domingo Province: The Best Cultural Tours

July 23, 2021 Vivienne Hutton

Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic and a UNESCO world heritage site, is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas and one of the most populous cities in the Caribbean. The city is a mix of old world charm and modern Latin flair. Its medieval palaces and fortresses mix with nightlife and shopping to rival any modern city in the world. You'll find pristine beaches and hidden gems like a salsa/merengue club set inside a huge underground cave.

We leave early in the morning from any hotel in Bávaro and Bayahibe, in comfortable and modern buses, accompanied by an expert guide. Walking along the narrow roads of yesterday, we will visit the beginnings of the New World, where at the beginning of the 15th century the first colonial houses were built, touring the Colonial City; We will pay tribute to the Primada de las Américas Cathedral, the birthplace of a fervent Catholic faith; We will also take a walk through the Alcazar de Colón, which will take you to the time of the first Spanish conquerors. The full day excursion also includes a typical lunch in a famous Dominican food restaurant, to savor our typical dishes. Is there more ?, Yes, we will walk along the Malecon of Santo Domingo where we can appreciate the beauty of the Caribbean Sea and some of the buildings of the modern city such as the Palace of Fine Arts, the National Theater and the Presidential Palace among others.

When I started planning our honeymoon trip, I wanted to include a true cultural experience, in our plans. We had reservations at a very nice all inclusive resort in Punta Cana, but I know (from experience) these type places actually kind of shield you from the true flavor, culture and experience of the country they are supposed to represent. So, I set out to find an experienced and highly regarded local guide. Using the internet and friending several people on FB, I found several people that had wonderful experiences with Mr. Jose. After contacting and discussing what I was looking for myself and Wife to experience, I felt I could not go wrong. Well, I was SO right. Jose is a fine gentleman and true steward of his fine country. His knowledge and passion is second to none. We only had a day to go to the city and he utilized every second of our day to the fullest! He gifted me with exactly what I had asked him to provide, a true taste of The Dominican Republic. The city, the rich colonial history, the forest, a waterfall (that we had all to our selves), a wonderful little rural town (where we dined on very authentic, amazing food with locals), some freshly prepared milk candy that was to die for and all the history and local flavor that we could soak in, within the 12 hours we spent together. We so enjoyed ourselves that I am already planning to bring my 17 year old stepson and stay in the city, so we have more time to soak up the beautiful Dominican culture. That day was truly one of the most memorable I've ever had traveling and to top it all off, we gained a new friend. Muchos gracias amigo, Brian K Pinsonat & Angela T Pinsonat Hope to see you soon!

The history of the colonial era is told mostly from a Spanish Latino perspective, dissociating the importance and significant contributions of black-Afro-descendant culture to the Dominican Republic, almost leaving an empty bias on the resistance of the African diasporas on the island. I intend to provide a historical look at what happened during the period of slavery in addition to the current view of the Dominican and its identity or not corresponding to the Afro heritage.
