Rovinj-Rovigno (Croatian pronounced [rǒʋiːɲ]; Italian: Rovigno, Ancient Greek: Ρυγίνιον (Ryginion), Latin: Ruginium) is a city in Croatia situated on the north Adriatic Sea with a population of 14,294 (2011). Located on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula, it is a popular tourist resort and an active fishing port. Istriot, a Romance language once widely spoken in this part of Istria, is still spoken by some of the residents. The town is officially bilingual, Italian and Croatian, hence both town names are official and equal.

We’d booked this tour with Costco as we had had good luck with their service on previous cruises—and they did not disappoint. Our guide, Jolanta Car, was waiting at the bottom of the gangplank with a sign. There were three of us + Jolanta. We walked to her car and began the hour and 15 minute drive into Istria. Jolanta speaks perfect english and carried on a running conversation all the way to the first stop: a little farm restaurant out in the hills. After a brief wait for the members of another tour (which arrived by bus), we had a light lunch with wine and could see Motovun—an old tiny town built on top of a mountain. That was our second stop. Jolanta parked the car and we started up the hill. My wife had recent surgery and chose not to make the walk, and waited in the car. The three of us walked to the top and Jolanta purchased tickets to walk around the wall, as well as a cappucino. We spent about a half-hour there, then walked back to the car and continued to a small distillery, where the owner provided an overview of their processing and provided free samples. Very informative. We returned to the ship on time. It was a wonderfult time and we felt like we had gained a new friend. As we left here, my wife asked if she had a card—she does and owns her own tour company ([email protected]). When we got back to the ship, my wife wondered if Yolanta could set up a private tour in Dubrovnik. We had not as it was supposed to rain—but perhaps a private tour could work. 45 minutes later, we had a tour and a deal. The Dubrovnik tour was also excellent and we recommend Jolanta without reservation.

We hired Adam at the last second to take us to Plivitce lakes for the day. He was super flexible with timing given that we booked the tour the night before at 11 pm. Adam was a great conversationalist and we enjoyed learning about his experiences during our 2 hour drive to the lakes. He was helpful in showing us around and gave great local suggestions of places to try in Zagreb.

This city tour was very interesting and fascinating. I liked to hear all the knowledge and information our tour-guide Viviana could provide us with. She did this in a very good way, so we didn't felt to be in school, but together with a very good friend who knew a great deal about everything we saw around us. In this way also a very good start for our 2 weeks in Palermo to know, where we would like to explore more o go back to. Thank you very much Viviana, that was just marvellous! François + Esteban

10. Kvarner Bay Gems (Rovinj, Bale & Vodnjan) from Pula

Traveljaz

After pick-up, we drive to Rovinj – probably the most romantic town in Istria. The super-charming old town, a 1200 years old sarcophagus and cobbled streets filled with artisans are waiting for you. Then, we continue to Bale. This small town was once a hideout of famous Giacomo Casanova (check out the Soardo-Bembo Palace) whilst today it’s known for excellent olive oil producers. Join an extra virgin olive oil tasting or follow the traces of Casanova within the tiny stone-walled old town. Next stop is Vodnjan. Before World War 2, this was one of the liveliest towns in Istria. Today it is being reborn again as a cultural and culinary destination in Istria. Join a professional wine tasting of typical Istrian grapes or become an art hunter and find all the world-class murals scattered around the village town of Vodnjan. Ask your Krug Guide for more insights. The tour ends in the afternoon back in Pula.

Inclusions: Air-conditioned vehicle, English Speaking Local Driver/Guide, Visit to Rovinj, Bale & Vodnjan

Exclusions: Food & Beverage, Personal spending, Optional Olive Tasting & Wine Tasting, Gratuities to Guide/Driver
