Things to do in Reykjavik, Capital Region: The Best Monuments & Statues

February 7, 2022 Oliva Fomby

Reykjavik bears the distinction of being the world’s northernmost capital, and for many Icelandic visitors it also serves as a gateway to the rugged adventure options beyond. Recharge after outdoor pursuits in one of the many geothermal springs or luxurious indoor spas. We appreciate Reykjavik’s open-minded and energetic culture that includes a hip and internationally recognized music and arts scene, great food and notoriously "enthusiastic" nightlife.

Reykjavik Art Museum Asmundarsafn

Reykjavik Art Museum is the leading art museum in Iceland and has three locations in Reykjavik: Hafnarhus, Kjarvalsstadir and Asmundarsafn. Asmundarsafn is the former home and workshop of the sculptor Asmundur Sveinsson, who designed and mostly constructed this building himself in Laugardalur. The museum served to preserve his work and life, and displays the largest collection of his sculptures both inside and outside the building. Asmundur's art greatly reflects his lifelong interest in the Icelandic sagas, folk tales and classical mythology.

When you walk to the cliffs, be aware that there are FOUR paths to different parts of the cliffs, and what you will see from each edge is entirely different and well worth the short walk to each one. Photographers' dream.

Imagine Peace Tower

The IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is a work of art conceived by the legendary artist and peace advocate Yoko Ono as a beacon to world peace. It is dedicated to the memory of John Lennon. The IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is located on Viðey Island in Kollafjörður and it's light is well visible from Reykjavík city and the capital area. Every year the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER emerges an hour after sunset between 9 October (Lennon's day of birth) and 8 December (Lennon's demise). In addition the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER emerges for one week on winter solstice, on New Year's Eve, for one week during spring equinox and few other selected dates. The ever changing weather conditions play an interesting part to the strength, intensity and brilliance of the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER’S light. During it's lighting time guided tours are avaiable called the Imagine Peace Tour. The tour is dedicated to the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER and Lennon’s and Ono’s continuing campaign for world peace. It is run by Elding with departures from Reykjavík's Old harbour. The tour unites history, art and nature is an interesting way.

I didn’t go to the peace tower but you can see it in Rejkavik. It’s pretty to see especially near the marina when the Northern Lights are out

The Statue of Leif Eiriksson

Reviewed By Margo7850p

The statue in front of the Hallgrimskirkja church represents Leif Eriksson. For centuries it was recognized that Christopher Columbus and his people were the first Europeans in America. But the Italian traveler was late, by 492 years and three days. Leif Ericson is recognized as the explorer who got to America before Christopher Columbus. This statue was designed by the American sculptor Alexander Stirling Calder in 1929 and gifted to Iceland in 1930. It is the gift of America to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the Icelandic Parliament . This has a prime position in front of the Hallgrimskirkja. So, it is easy to find and also allows some excellent photographic opportunities. Great, proud and strong Viking statue. Beautiful .
