Santuario di San Michele Arcangelo

Reviewed By Soccca - Tolmin, Slovenia

We were travelling from Naples to Monte Gargano, so we made a stop in Monte Sant'Angelo to see this wonderful church. It looks like a common church from outside, but the interior is really something you can't see often. So don't miss it if you are nearby.

Cattedrale di San Sabino

Reviewed By TheMarshal84 - Liverpool, United Kingdom

A charming Romanesque Church in the heart of the old city, Cattedrale di San Sabino is definitely worth a look if your religious or not. Built over the ruins of the Imperial Byzantine cathedral destroyed in 1156 by William I 'Wicked' of Sicily, the building is mostly 12-13 century in construction and holds artistic treasures that span the cities long and at times complex past. Free (as most cathedrals in Italy are), and a great way to stay out of the rain (if you're visiting offseason). please allow 20-40 mins, if you just wish to see the cathedral on its own.

Castel del Monte

Reviewed By Seeking_True_Quality

As we walked uphill from the car park where we got off our bus, the two of us were very excited. We planned our visit to Castel del Monte a long time ago, as soon as we found out that it was in fact an existing building, where it was and what was its name! We saw the replica of this building much earlier in the movie 'The Name of the Rose', it was the famous Edifice, the largest library in Christendom, with its mysterious labyrinth. Describing that fictional library, Umberto Eco was inspired by Castel del Monte... The walk from the car park to the top of the hill was long, took us some 15 to 20 minutes, the view was obscured by the trees, but finally we arrived and there was it, this perfect octagonal building with eight octagonal towers, shining white on the midday sun. This ceremonial castle was built around 1240, probably as a hunting lodge for Frederick II, the Holy Roman Emperor of the Hohenstaufen dynasty, near the end of his reign. It is located not far from Castel Lagopesole, his headquarters, now in the region of Basilicata. We proceeded to the elegant and ornate main entrance. After we paid the entrance fee, we entered an inner octagonal courtyard with three doors leading to the ground floor. In the rooms of the ground floor there was an interesting exhibition, depicting the life of Frederick II. We reached the upper floor by a staircase located in one of the towers. Unfortunately there was nothing left from the XIII. century in those vaulted rooms - except the stunning marble decoration of the walls, because the Castle served as a prison for a long time. On our way out, we stopped in the souvenir shop to buy T-shirts and some books - an echo of that fictional library. For the two of us, lovers of history and geometry, Castel del Monte was a must!

Easily one of the most interesting churches in the entire region. The early medieval floor mozaic based on a tree of life motif is incredible and is in fantastic condition.

Gravina Sotterranea

In 2005 a group of speleologues leaded by Mr Michele Parisi, discovers and makes know to people tunnels, cisterns, aqueducts, cells, rocky churches, barns, old furnaces hidden in meanders placed under the city centre. In this suggestive world they discovered great towers and ruins of old city walls. It is very interesting to admire the historical cells of the Ducal Palace (the house in which pope Benedict XIII was born), the cell placed under the seat of Gravina Souterrain.

Lecce is a true center piece of Baroque architecture. The Basilica a excellent example of this style. You really need to stand and study the building with your eyes as you would a piece of art.
